Lucky 15

A good winner, a short-head second and a third yesterday, so we're knocking persistently on the door once again. Let's see what Thursday Jan 31st has in store.

Today's racing looks like this; jumping action from Exeter and Leicester, with all-weather flat meetings taking place at Dundalk and Kempton.

It's an eight-race card at the Sunbury-on-Thames track and with lots of the sand Gods in attendance it's to Kempton we're heading.

This is an example of how to put together a Lucky 15 - if you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £278 for your total £7.50 stake.

Popular legend confirms that Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. Want the lowdown - all the ins and outs? My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.

Lucky 15 tips, Wednesday

  • 18.30 - Aratus @ 11/4
  • 19.30 - Orange N Blue @ 2/1
  • 20.00 - Something To Do @ 10/3
  • 20.30 - Sao Timothy @ 7/2

18.30 - Aratus @ 11/4

Jockey-of-the-moment Rossa Ryan rode this one here 25 days ago, and trainer Clive Cox's 6-yr-old gelding was narrowly denied by Talis Evolvere, a horse in tremendous recent form himself. Ryan is once again on board - a massive plus.

Aratus had a year off from Oct '22, and a wind operation in March. In four runs since resuming his career he's come close now twice, and for me looks poised to strike today.

This is a horse that's won at tracks of the calibre of Goodwood, Doncaster and Newbury earlier in his career, and it's interesting that he's being persevered with, now aged six.

That last, excellent effort on this course was achieved over 1m, and he drops down to 7f today, the trip that's yielded all career wins to date.

19.30 - Orange N Blue @ 2/1

Ultra-shrewd trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam trains this 4-yr-old gelding who went very close at Lingfield 11 days ago (and has been strongly backed this morning). Will be having only his sixth career start, and stepped up to this middle-distance trip for the last two of those.

Appeared not to get it at Southwell, but palpably did last time in Surrey. He's by Saxon Warrior, second in an Irish Derby, so stamina shouldn't be an issue. Callum Shepherd was on top last time and encouragingly retains the mount. Cracking little heat.

20.00 - Something To Do @ 10/3

Hollie Doyle rides for George Boughey, and the horse carries just 8st 4lb. I rest my case!

Ah, if only it was that straightforward - but looking at those stark details it's hard not to be drawn to this 3-yr-old gelding. He only made his handicap debut at Wolves on Monday and was beaten just half-a-length by a Charlie Fellows/Rossa Ryan hotpot.

Hollie has few peers in the saddle, and what a great booking it is in my view. Something To Do had multiple entries to choose from and has selected this Class 5 just a couple of days after Wolverhampton - where incidentally it was over 3l back to the third-placed horse. Big chance.

20.30 - Sao Timothy @ 7/2

The excellent David Probert rides this one for trainer Robert Stephens. Sao Timothy is a lightly-raced horse that tried his hand at hurdling last time, with admittedly no success. This is a lowly contest, and prior to that NH outing at Ludlow he ran well at Lingfield in October under today's jockey, in similar company.

That Lingers run showed that the 4-yr-old gelding has some ability, and with Probert reappearing I'm hoping the horse can kick-start his rather dormant thus far career this evening. David's sticking around for this lucky last - let's hope he's a good judge.
