Vanillier Grand National Odds 2024: 2023 runner-up a contender once more

Next up in our rundown of all the horses set to take part in the 2024 Grand National is Vanillier, who was installed as the favourite following the weights being revealed but has since settled back into the market yet looks set to go off as a top contender.

Heading into the BobbyJo Chase over at Fairyhouse, it was expected to be the day that Vanillier would put a stamp on the field and show everyone that he was a deserved favourite for the Aintree Grand National. Things did not go as expected, however, and rather it was I Am Maximus for Willie Mullins who excelled and suddenly shot up the betting market as he beat out this horse by no fewer than 14 lengths in a dominating display.

Hope is certainly not lost though for those who are looking to back this Gavin Cromwell-trained nine-year-old as he looks to return to the Liverpool track and go one better than a year ago, when it was he who chased Corach Rambler up the last before finishing second to the eventual winner by two-and-a-quarter-lengths.

That performance certainly got this horse well and truly noticed, but despite showing impressive heart and speed to go close to winning, it might shock you to note that Vanillier hasn’t actually won any race since November 2021, when he won a Grade 2 success over at Punchestown by 26 lengths. Only two horses finished that day and since then, despite placing six times in the top three, victory has eluded him.

Since the Grand National last year, he’s finished fifth of six, fifth of seven, 15th of 25 and that runner-up result in the four-horse BobbyJo Chase. So if you are looking to bet on recent form, this one is not for you.
