Our three-day winning streak came to a juddering halt overnight but we go again with a horse whose 2024 debut was a massive step-up from what we'd seen previously. Neil Monnery thinks that speed might be real.

He takes us through his Nap of the Day for Wednesday and his Best Bet from the Extra Place Places in his US Racing Tips column for today...

Nap of the Day:

Our three-day winning streak was snapped overnight at Assiniboia Downs as Not Afraid failed to live up to his reputation and three-straight below par runs this year seems to indicate that his hot spell up at the track is over.

Now, you may be thinking Play Chicken will be my Nap of the Day. Four straight wins over a mile on the dirt at Mountaineer Park, each with a faster time than the last has been quite the run for the previously fairly average horse.

Yet for some reason, he’s being sent out on the turf tonight, a surface he hasn’t won on since breaking his Maiden back in 2020. At what will probably be Evens or Odds-on, I’m not touching him but I will be looking closely at the race in the morning.

Instead I’ve been seduced by Into Love, who is going in the 21:22 at Churchill Downs. This four-year-old enjoyed a solid enough three-year-old campaign, winning once and twice finishing runner-up in four starts but her 2024 season started with an absolutely stonking performance and putting up a superb 98 Equibase Speed Figure in winning an Allowance Race under the Twin Spires last month. It was a huge step-forward from what we’d seen previously and has vaulted her in one performance to the watch-list for the older horses in the sprint division.

She is up against a couple of decent horses here in Pistol and Amaretti, so we’ll see whether that speed is for real but another strong performance later today would put her on the radar for bigger races down the line. I think we'll be getting 2/1 or so once the market is priced-up and that would feel good.

Extra Place Bet of the Day:

No result to comment on yesterday here as the card was abandoned at Fairmount Park due to the excessive heat in the area.

There are currently five races over on betfred.com where we are paying out the extra place tonight for each-way bets and the one that I’m taking a look at is the 19:00 at Delaware Park, which is a pretty high quality race for a middle of the card Starter Optional Claiming race, with no fewer than five of the seven runners entered having won last time out.

All of the top-six runners according to the US Pool odds should be considered legitimate contenders to hit the board and the one I like the look of is the lightly-raced four-year-old filly Blaze On.

Sired by Tamarkuz, who won the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita, she has some pedigree and has found her feet after a very stop-start career to this point. We only saw her once as a two-year-old, winning her Maiden at Laurel Park but then an eight-month break saw her return with a third-place finish to mark her only appearance as a three-year-old.

Last month saw this filly return to the track and she posted back-to-back wins at Delaware Park to show us something. That last win, just 13 days ago, was by far her most impressive and saw her Equibase Speed Figure jump from 63 to an 80. That is similar to what the favourites in this race have done in recent weeks. If there is another step forward to come then she can be in the mix to win but we should get decent enough odds each-way to make it a viable play. I'm expecting 6/1 or 13/2 when the market opens.
