Nap of the Day:

We start this new column with the opening race of the day over at Louisiana Downs (22:05). This 7f sprint with a purse of $10,000 hasn’t exactly attracted the best field in the world but the four-year-old Julia’s Warrior has shown flashes of speed and in a weak field, this is a good spot to see him pick up his first win in his last eight starts.

His connections keep moving him up from sprint distances to over a mile and the contrast in results is stark. He has yet to hit the board going longer than 8f, yet in six of his 10 outings going shorter, we've seen at least a top-three finish.

Last time out going a similar distance, he finished runner-up to a three-time winner over at Fair Grounds. The fields over at Louisiana Downs are traditionally of much less quality, so this looks like an excellent spot to pick up that first win since March of last year.

The biggest competition will be Chi Town Hustler, who looked promising back in 2022, placing twice in Listed Stakes races at Hawthorne, but has done very little since winning his only outing in 2023, a 6f Claiming race at Fair Grounds. In his previous four starts, he hasn’t hit the board and has averaged finishing sixth.

A change of trainer earlier this year has seemingly not brought back that form and I’ll go with the horse who has shown more in recent times and not back the one who has shown nothing in nearly 12 months.

As of 16:30, this race still hasn't been priced-up on the site but I would expect him to go off at around 6/4.

Extra Place Bet of the Day:

Not a great deal of races today Stateside where Betfred are paying out the Extra Place but I do like the look of a fairly big price in the opener at Horseshoe Indianapolis (19:10). That horse is the three-year-old filly Baytown Kitty Cat who should go off at a big number and has a decent chance to finish in those top three places.

At the time of writing, this Paul McEntree-trained horse is 9/1 in a seven-runner field and is considered the sixth-choice in the betting. Last time out, she finished runner-up over at Belterra Park and her recent speed figures on dirt are better than both Collected Success and Mischief Jac, both of whom are shorter in the market.

I don’t see her competing for the win but an each-way punt is certainly a legitimate play if that 10/1 price holds.
