A place and two duds from our three US Extra Place Race picks on Tuesday so we need to up our game back to Monday’s high levels. As always all of the selections are from outside the top three according to the Morning Line odds as we search for value among the longer shots in the field and we stick to three races all at the same track today…

US Horse Racing Picks – Wednesday 16 August, 2023

  • Back Wootdareitis e/w in the 18:00 at Delaware Park @ SP
  • Back Im Your Papi e/w in the 18:30 at Delaware Park @ SP
  • Back Stacks of Silver e/w in the 20:30 at Delaware Park @ SP

Not exactly a great field for the second race of the day at Delaware Park (18:00) but for this six-furlong race I’m looking at a four-year-old searching for the speed he showed earlier in the year. Wootdareitis had some solid enough runs down at Tampa Bay Downs to start the year but then fell off and took a long break. A return at this track last month was not good but a follow-up run saw a third place finish albeit way behind the top two. If however he recaptures that speed from the turn of the year, he would be right towards the business end of the race plus he’s carrying nine lbs less than everyone bar the favourite. Joint-fifth choice on the Morning Line and has place possibilities.

Half-an-hour later and I’m going back to a well that was not fruitful last month by taking Im Your Papi in the 18:30 at Delaware Park. This four-year-old showed plenty of potential last year but his 2023 campaign has been absolutely woeful with two abject runs. Hope however springs eternal that he can knock off that rust following a ten-month layoff and the form he showed a year ago when winning twice at this distance and on this course can come again. Rank outsider on the M/L but is carrying 113lbs with most of his rivals at 120 or 122. Looking for a big priced place.

We are still at Delaware Park making it all three Extra Place Races at the track covered today and in the 20:30 it is Stacks of Silver that not only are we looking to make but is also the name of the horse. Last time out was his first run since last October and despite a fourth-place finish, this four-year-old out of multiple Grade I winner Liam’s Map showed good speed. He’s won three times over the mile distance here and surely he’s better than the odds indicate as the joint-fifth choice. Good quality race though. Should be plenty of speed.
