We came back with a bang yesterday after a hiatus last week, promptly putting up a 17/2 winner in our first race back. The other two picks didn’t run so well but that score gave us a nice profit to start the week.

As always, all of our selections are each-way and selected from Betfred’s Extra Place Races, where we pay out three places rather than two and every tip is for a horse outside the top three according to the Morning Line as we go value hunting…

US Horse Racing Tips – Tuesday 5 September, 2023

  • Back Run Casper Run e/w in the 19:42 at Finger Lakes @ SP
  • Back St. Lukes e/w in the 19:50 at Thistledown @ SP
  • Back Bosship e/w in the 21:09 at Finger Lakes @ SP

*Betfred will price up US Races nearer Post Time.

For the second time in the (albeit) very short history of this column, I’m putting up five-year-old Run Casper Run over at Finger Lakes (19:42). Back in late July this Ghostzapper colt gave me a place and has enjoyed a good run up at the New York track so far in 2023. Four races and three times he’s hit the board with a win, a second and a third. Last time out was the only time a place wasn’t forthcoming but going back to his 2022 campaign at the track, a record of eight places from 11 starts is pretty darn decent for the joint-fifth choice according to the Morning Line.

Only one Extra Place Race on tap at Thistledown today (19:50) where you’ll find me taking the rank outsider looking for a big priced place. Four-year-old St. Lukes has been extremely lightly raced in his career having only appeared on track seven times since his debut two years ago. In that time however he’s got three wins to his name, two of which are at the mile distance including just three weeks ago at this very track. Surely he should be shorter than the 12/1 on the M/L? If we get that price once Betfred prices up the race then it is a big each-way play.

Going for a Chris Englehart double at Finger Lakes as my pick in the 21:09 has the same trainer as Run Casper Run earlier. I like the chances of the four-year-old Bosship, who looks to have shaken off the rust following a break of over a year. Last time out a very solid third place with good speed figures indicates that he’s getting close to his three-year-old form where he won three of four at this track. Priced up as the fifth-choice on the Morning Line, it indicates that there is place value to be had.
