Tuesday night brought us good times as Brienne of Tarth, tipped up at 8s, went off at 12s and won, giving us a healthy profit to kick start our week.

For Wednesday’s US Races Extra Place Race column, we have four horses all priced up at 6/1 on the Morning Line as we continue our daily quest to find each-way value to take advantage of Betfred paying out the top three rather than two in these races…

US Horse Racing Tips – Wednesday 20 September, 2023

  • Back Vavite e/w in the 17:50 at Thistledown @ SP
  • Back Misawa e/w in the 19:42 at Finger Lakes @ SP
  • Back Miami Chrome e/w in the 20:11 at Finger Lakes @ SP
  • Back Southern Sense e/w in the 02:05 at Mountaineer Park @ SP

We very much have a theme for Wednesday’s selections as we are finding horses who have been extremely consistent at the track and distance they are being asked to race at later today.

This brings us to our first pick of the day, which is Vavite in the 17:50 at Thistledown. Since moving to the course for their long spring-summer meet, this four-year-old filly has hit the board six times in her past seven races.

Her speed figures aren’t anything spectacular, but that kind of record is exactly what we are looking for when trying to best utilise the Extra Place Race offerings from Betfred. Priced up at 6/1, should she go off at those odds, any place will see a profit each-way.

If you said to me that I could bet on a horse who has finished in the top three in his previous three starts, all at this track, all at similar distances and they are the fifth choice of seven according to the odds on the Morning Line, I’d say yes, yes I’d like to bet on that horse.

This is the situation we’ve found ourselves in come the 19:42 at Finger Lakes, where the five-year-old Misawa is being sent out by trainer Wade Rarick for a five-and-a-half furlong sprint race on the dirt.

He was sired by three-time Grade I winner First Samurai and has been in the form of his life lately, putting up speed figures similar to what he did as a three-year-old early in his career. He’s finished first, second and third at Finger Lakes since he started his 2023 campaign back in July. Yet the oddsmaker at the track still only has him as a 6/1 shot.

The equibase speed figure of 70 last time out was his best on dirt since January of 2021, and he seems to have found a home at the New York track. I like this one.

Following on with the next race on the card at Finger Lakes (20:11), if you’re a fan of betting on horses who are a model of consistency then I have one for you.

Miami Chrome, similar to Misawa above, has more than found a home at the New York track having placed in no fewer than six of his seven races there so far in their spring-summer season.

Last year when he was sent out on this course, we saw very good results as well, placing in ten of his 12 races. Therefore, his overall record here is 19 starts, five wins, six seconds and five third places. Can’t argue with that, and the Morning Line has this California Chrome colt as the joint-fifth choice of seven. Another one that I like a lot to hit the board.

We go four deep today as in the 02:05 at Mountaineer Park we have another horse sired out of a multiple Grade I winner (our third of the night) with Street Sense being the stallion in question time.

Southern Sense is the four-year-old running tonight and this horse has won three of his nine races at the West Virginia track this season and has placed in three others. That is a pretty good ratio and his speed figures are currently towards the best of his life including one Equibase figure of 91, albeit on a fast track, which smashed his career high by 14, indicating that he’s clearly improving.
