Our US Extra Place Race column takes in Thistledown and Horseshoe Indianapolis this Wednesday as we continue our quest for finding value in the market.

As always, all of our selections come from outside the top-three according to the odds on the Morning Line…

Thistledown is the centre of Betfred’s Extra Place Race universe this Wednesday with three of the eight races on the card getting that payout for a top-three finish. I’ll however only be picking the one race from here with two from Horseshoe Indianapolis.

We’ll start our day with the opening race at the Ohio track (17:50) where the fourth choice on the Morning Line should be worth a bob or two. Muni Muni Slew is a six-year-old trained by Michael Maker who has been heavily raced in his career.

From early 2021 through mid 2022, he was on fire, winning nine times and placing no fewer than eight times in a total of 21 races. That is pretty darn good going. 2023 however has not been as impressive as you would hope having opened his year with five straight finishes outside the places. In his past two however, it has been back-to-back runner-up runs with speed figures right back to where they were a year or so ago. If he continues that form, has every chance.

Next up we travel the 300 miles or so east to Horseshoe Indianapolis where an American Pharoah colt looks a good price to hit the board in the 20:01.

Swiss Guard has seen plenty of action on the track considering his young age having already raced 12 times. The results have been mixed to say the least but there has been one obvious distinction between his good and his not-so-good runs. When we’ve been disappointed, it has been in bigger fields attracting a better class of horse. When he’s been sent out at smaller tracks like Hawthorne, good times have followed.

Four of his best speed figures have come at the track with his worst runs coming at places like Saratoga, Churchill Downs and Keeneland. This is a low-quality field of just seven runners, which should work out nicely for him and if we get near the 8/1 on the Morning Line, then I’m happy with this as an each-way play.

Later on the card, the three-year-old filly Tall Girl in the 21:03 is our final each-way selection of the day.

Similar to Swiss Guard above, another very heavily raced horse considering her age having raced exactly 12 times since making her debut at Monmouth Park back in August of last year. Since then, she has bounced around the turf scene and has finished top-three in seven of those races, winning the once.

In three starts on this course, she’s placed twice and narrowly missed out last time, finishing fourth despite a solid speed figure. This Randy Klopp trained filly is getting 4lbs relief compared to the four horses shorter than her on the Morning Line and has shown remarkable consistency in recent runs. Plenty of reason to think a top-three finish is more than plausible.
