It was our first totally blank day for six columns yesterday as we went 0 for 3. Not what you’d call an ideal start to the week.

Back on the horse as it were and we have three more selections from Betfred’s Extra Place Races for you to consider as we continue our search for value deep in the markets…

After a dud of a Monday, we start our Tuesday in Illinois at Fairmount Park (19:56), where we see a newcomer arrive at the track who has shown plenty of speed elsewhere.

Five-year-old Twirling Roses has not been enjoying his 2023 campaign if you look solely at the results but there is an underlying reason for optimism that we’ll see a strong performance this evening.

His speed figures are right up there with the top horses in the field and this son of Grade I winner Twirling Candy been plying his trade at tracks with deeper fields than what he’ll face this evening.

Fairmount Park is not one of the premier venues around and with small purses, it doesn’t attract the best fields. So to see a horse that has spent plenty of time at venues such as the Fair Grounds and Oaklawn Park is noteworthy.

This step-down in quality should be a big help and give him the chance to return to the pointy end of the race. With him opening as the fourth shot of seven, I like his chances to be a real contender.

Following a similar theme for our second selection of the evening as Kodiak Mamba makes his third appearance of his career at Fort Erie, having spent most of his time at the track racing in better fields down at Gulfstream Park and at Woodbine.

On his first outing here on the turf, he won a seven-furlong race before being asked to go one-mile-and-a-sixteenth on the dirt the next time out and not looking great. Both of his career wins have come on grass along with four of his seven places. So all evidence does suggest that he’s better suited to sprint events and to avoid the all-weather and dirt.

This is not a race full of quality so if we get the 8/1 expected on the Morning Line, this is a grand each-way play.

We go back to Fairmount Park to round off our evening and it is yet another six-furlong race on the dirt. Rather than pick a newcomer to the track this time though, we are going with a horse who has placed in six of his past seven starts here and is following the path of our first tip of the night, from Hawthorn to Fairmount Park.

That horse is Mon Ami Fuzzie, who has enjoyed plenty of success at the track since his first race here back in 2021. In 20 starts at this venue, we’ve seen this five-year-old win four times and place on ten other occasions. That is a pretty darn good ratio and his recent form is 3-2-1-1-2-5-2.

So putting together his record at the venue plus his recent form, every reason to believe the fourth shot on the Morning Line will outperform expectations.
