Friday rounded off an up and down week on the US Extra Place Race column on a searing high with two places plus a 10/1 win. Can’t say fairer than that. We are back refreshed after the weekend with three more selections all of which are from Betfred’s Extra Place Races and the picks are from outside the top three according to the Morning Line odds…

US Horse Racing Tips – Monday 21 August, 2023

  • Back Allure Fortune e/w in the 19:42 at Finger Lakes @ SP
  • Back La Reina Del Norte e/w in the 20:20 at Thistledown @ SP
  • Back Mister Mobil e/w in the 20:50 at Thistledown @ SP

Finger Lakes is where we’ll start in the fourth race on the card (19:42) where I like the eight-year-old Allure Fortune to outrun her expected odds. Priced up as the fourth choice on the Morning Line heading into the day, she has rebounded from an overall disappointing 2022 campaign to hit the board twice including a win in her 2023 outings. Her speed figures look back to what they were in 2021 when she regularly finished in the top three. Every chance here.

In the sixth at Thistledown (20:20) the fourth shot on the Morning Line is a legitimate win contender. La Reina Del Norte is a five-year-old Mare who has enjoyed a good summer campaign at Presque Isle Downs and has now moved. Two wins coupled with two additional places in her previous six starts is more than solid enough but both of her previous wins have been at five-and-a-half furlongs and that is exactly the distance she’ll be going this evening. Her recent speed figures have been slightly better than her three-year-old season so every chance to hit the board in this one and I wouldn’t even rule out the straight up win.

Half-an-hour later and still at Thistledown we have Race 7 where I’m looking for a return to form for the six-year-old Mister Mobil. This ten-time winner has been more than decent throughout his career primarily based at Mountaineer or here at Thistledown. His previous three runs however have all seen him miss the board and could be an indication that his speed is starting to wane. I’m not ready to give up however as it was only early May when he opened the Thistledown part of his season with a very fine win at six furlongs. Currently the fourth choice on the Morning Line and at his best, would be considerably shorter than what he’ll likely go off at.
