Wednesday was galling for this column. One bust. One place and two big prices finishing one spot outside the paying out positions. Gutting. As always all our US picks in this column are from Extra Place Races and are selected from horses outside the top three (or four if paying out four places) in the Morning Line Odds. On to Thursday, where we go for four races all from different tracks coast-to-coast…

US Horse Racing Tips – Thursday 27 July, 2023

  • Back Lilac Lace e/w in the 18:20 at Thistledown @ SP
  • Back Tartini e/w in the 21:34 at Saratoga @ SP
  • Back Bendettijoe e/w in the 00:00 at Del Mar @ SP
  • Back Stretch the Truth e/w in the 00:30 at Charles Town @ SP

My first pick for today comes in the 18:20 at Thistledown where the sixth favourite (of seven) according to the Morning Line has quite the record around this track. Since the start of 2022, this five-year-old mare has raced here seven times and only once not finished in the top three. This includes two outright wins. Her speed figures do look to be going in the wrong direction but even in the winter campaign at Mountaineer, only once did she fail to place. This isn’t a high quality field so the indicated odds feel big. That is why Lilac Lace gets the nod here.

One of my strategies when it comes to this column is to find value in a horse coming off an abnormally poor run. In the 21:34 at Saratoga we have one of those with Tartini, who was just nowhere in the 2m Grade II Belmont Gold Cup Invitational in June. Before that race however he had consistently placed, having finished top three in seven of his previous nine starts. The Saratoga meet is obviously a clear step up in competition compared to what he was facing at Turf Paradise but the speed figures indicate that he’s a faster horse than the favourite. We are paying out four places rather than three here so I like this one.

A big punt in the 00:00 at Del Mar where Bendettijoe looked absolutely nowhere in his one and only start over at Churchill Downs last year and hasn’t been seen in a race since. However a couple of strong bullet works at Santa Anita in the past month leads into his return and any horse sired by Tapit has to get at least a glance when handicapping a race. We are paying out four places here and at what looks likely to be double-figure odds, has a decent shot at hitting the board.

We continue our swing around different tracks with a trip to West Virginia and the 00:30 at Charles Town where Stretch the Truth has been allocated the lowest weight in the field of seven despite having won two of his last six and being placed twice more in those races, all of which where at this track and over the 4 ½ furlong distance. The Morning Line has this five-year-old as the fifth favourite and that doesn’t equate to what I’m seeing in terms of speed figures. Three places being paid out in this one and this Yolanda King trained gelding has every chance of taking one of them.
