19:35 Belmont At The Big A (Race 4) - Obeissante @ SP
Both trainers Chad Bown and Todd Pletcher are double handed here.
Brown has the likely favourite, the comebacking Lavender Disaster (7). ‘Disaster’ was what happened on his second start. She was fancied for a Grade 2 here but was carried out by a stablemate who blew the final turn. Her debut victory suggested she was a potential stakes winner. Her trainer has a fine record with lay off runners. She has worked forwardly in Florida and on her return to New York.
The other Chad Brown runner Forward Deployed (1) seemed to have no excuses when third at this level at Tampa last time. She probably doesn’t have the improvement in her than Lavender Disaster (7).
From her rail draw, she may play a role in blinkers first time as a pace factor and may run with Serendipity (2) early on. She wired a field of maidens by three plus lengths on debut at Gulfstream. That run suggested she may be a quality filly. Like Lavender Disaster (7), this race may be stepping stone before she tackles stakes company.
The Todd Pletcher trained pair are both twice raced. Capturing (5) has ran well in both her starts, running second at this level at Gulfstream last month. Her stablemate Obeissante (4) found five furlongs too short on debut.
She left that run behind, breaking her maiden at Gulfstream last month. Halfway up the straight, she seemed to have little chance. She did show a fine turn of foot to graduate by a couple of lengths. The opposition here is much, much tougher. That said, she will likely be a price and may round out the forecast at least.
Rare Art (6) lost a stake here by a nose as a juvenile. Her two runs this term have been disappointing bearing in mind her two year old form. The jury is out on her. Not so Pookie (3) who had a troubled trip in a stake in her last start in November. She has been working really well for her three-year-old debut.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
20:50 Churchill Downs (Race 7) - Lure Him In @ SP
Tres Soles (1) and Warrior Richard (9) make the turf to dirt move. Both have winning form on dirt. The rail drawn runner ran second the last time he ran in a claimer. Warrior Richard (9) is likely to take more money. The last time he raced on dirt, he was winner of a starter event at Keeneland.
The pair have chances in an open looking race.
Trident Hit (4) was a winner of a similar event to today at Oaklawn in February. He has a super record at Churchill. The horse for course is an obvious player back in at his winning level. Take out his last run and Glen Airy (7) is a contender too.
He did face a tough task at Keeneland and nine furlongs was maybe too far. He is better judged on a five length win and a close up second in allowance company prior to that at The Fair Grounds. This is a big drop in class.
Lure Him In (3) may be the answer here. The one time stakes winner is still capable of fine form at round todays level. He has won both his starts this year. It can be argued the fields he beat at Tampa and latterly Colonial Downs were not as deep as this. He did win them well. He’s in good hands and has an adaptable running style.
Bernin Hot (2) and Great Escape (6) ship in from lesser venues. The first named won at Mahoning Valley in January. He has two victories here at Churchill Downs. Great Escape (6) has been freshened up after running at Delta Downs.
He goes for a dangerous trainer.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
21:55 Churchill Downs (Race 9) - Mad About Marie @ SP
It will be interesting to see how much money the spacey Casilda (7) takes.
She was claimed off a three-plus length maiden claiming winner at Keeneland last month. Her new trainer has found a winnable spot, running her back for sale for the same price. Churchill is not as speed friendly and she has another furlong to last.
Maybe Mad About Marie (9) can run Casilda (7) down. She had a far from clean journey in a much, much better race at Keeneland on her return. Her best run was when third in an allowance optional claimer at The Fair Grounds over an extended mile.
She did break her maiden over course and distance last September. Now at the lowest level since then, she has a good chance to get back to winning ways.
Dark Fury (8) ran below her best over five and a half furlongs at Horseshoe Indianapolis last month. She has the back form to contend and runs as if the step up to today’s distance will suit. Bow to Clara (4) has form up to six-and-a-half furlongs. The allowance event she ran second in at Sunland wouldn’t be as deep as some of the bigger tracks. She has to be respected getting Jose Ortiz and running first time for sale.
Rando (1) and Animal Fries (2) have been running on The Tapeta at Turfway. Both broke their maidens on dirt. Rando (1) has faced tougher fields since. She is one to consider on the class drop. Animal Fries (2) has not been lasting home over a mile. She runs as if seven furlongs will suit.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
