It has been a few weeks since I last penned a US Extra Place Races column but I came away with a straight up win and two places from my five picks all outside of the top three in the betting as per the Morning Line. That is my rule for this piece and with a bumper crop of races to pick from tonight Stateside, I’m back with some thoughts and make four selections from three different tracks…
We start with the only race available from Delaware Park where Betfred are paying three places rather than two and that is the 19:00 where we have a four-year-old in Winter’s Ghost who has won three straight down at Tampa Bay Downs. That is enough to catch the eye but when you see his speed figures are certainly getting better with every race, you question why he’s the fourth choice on the Morning Line. It will be his first run up in Delaware but he’s only finished worse than third once in eight outings. Value play here.
Next up we go to Horseshoe Indianapolis for a State Bred sprint race that lacks real quality. This is the 20:01 and my selection is the second-biggest price on the Morning Line in Sticker. This three-year-old did absolutely nothing in his first three races but last time out found a way to win and jump forward significantly in the speed figure. That pace shown in that victory is similar to what the favourite has been putting out recently. Chance of a big score here at what I expect to be a big price.
One more big priced pick at the same track comes in the 22:36 where Betfred are paying out four places rather than three and I like the price Moms Moon is showing on the Morning Line. I always take interest in any big price turf horse out of Kitten’s Joy and like Sticker above, won last time out with a step up in speed. The biggest concern is out of all the seven races when he’s not won, he hasn’t once finished in the top four. Feels like a strange quirk that, one ready to be changed.
Back into the State Bred ranks we go with the 20:50 at Thistledown where we make Ladybuggin our selection. When you look at races in this field, you fully expect the speed figures to be down on what you’d get in a regular race and that is certainly the case here. The top two on the Morning Line look like the class of the field but that third spot looks up for grabs so give me the second biggest longshot who has finished top three in three of her previous five starts.
