It was a non-runner, a loss and a place on Tuesday for our US Racing Tips featuring Extra Place Races column, so a mixed bag. For Wednesday we have four picks and as always – they are from outside the top three (or four if paying four places) according to the Morning Line odds…

US Horse Racing Tips – Wednesday 26 July, 2023

  • Back Run Casper Run e/w in the 18:44 at Finger Lakes @ SP
  • Back Im Your Papi e/w in the 19:00 at Delaware Park @ SP
  • Back Elvirus e/w in the 00:25 at Mountaineer Park @ SP
  • Back Love to Zoom e/w in the 01:15 at Mountaineer Park @ SP

We’ll start our picks at Finger Lakes where in the 18:44 it is Run Casper Run who we’ll back each-way. This five-year-old out of Ghostzapper has been extremely consistent at the track over the past year or so having finished in the top three six times from nine starts. His speed figures are very comparable to the short-priced favourite who is stepping down in class. A top three finish would not shock whatsoever.

Over at Delaware Park in the 19:00 it is the four-year-old Im Your Papi who gets the nod from me. This horse is only racing in his second race of the year having hopefully knocked off the rust from an eight-month layoff last time out in a bit of a disappointing run. Last year though he finished with two wins in his final four races and if he can get back to that, has every chance of placing here.

In the 00:25 at Mountaineer Park, I’m going with a real punt and taking Elvirus at what should be a very big price. Betfred are paying out four places in this race and this five-year-old out of the splendid Malibu Moon has been in fine form down at Charles Town, finishing in the top four no fewer than six times in eight starts. One massive (and it is massive) caveat though is they were all on dirt whereas this is a turf race. His record on the grass is not good (two starts, no places) but at what should be a very enticing price in a relatively low quality field, I think it is a worthwhile play.

Just under an hour later at the same track, we have the 01:15 where three places are being paid out with Betfred and I’m plumping for Love to Zoom. This five-year-old had a very poor spell early in the year with her speed figures dipping way below her average but has picked it up recently back to her career norms. Went beyond a mile for the first time last time out and won so seems to be comfortable with the extra distance.

*Betfred offer several races each day from the US where we pay out Extra Places. You can check them all out every morning on our special page listing Extra Place Races linked to on the right (desktop) and down the page (mobile)…
