Horse Racing Tips: Pounds can cash in at Kempton

There are six race meetings scheduled across Britain and Ireland onWednesday, five afternoon fixtures, including two over jumps, followed by an AW card under the lights.

Bellewstown get proceedings underway at 13:38, shortly ahead of Musselburgh, Sligo, Catterick and Warwick, while the action goes deep into the evening with Kempton’s bumper nine-race card kicking off at 16:23.

Among our fancies is one for Donald McCain who is on a favourable mark and may have been unlucky not to win at Bangor-on-Dee last time.

14:13 Bellewstown - Master Garvey @ 20/1

Joseph Anthony Murray’s MASTER GARVEY isn’t straightforward, but he’s on a good mark at present and would surely have gone close over this course and distance last month had he not repeatedly been checked in his run.

The five-year-old has done his winning in the spring in the past couple of seasons, most recently off a mark of 47 at Dundalk in March, but he’s been running well in defeat of late and was a significant eyecatcher when finishing sixth of 15 runners on his penultimate start.

Initially set plenty to do and then repeatedly seeing his path blocked when attempting to make ground under Colin Keane in the final-furlong-and-a-half, to finish as close as he did was a notable effort in the circumstances.

His subsequent defeat at Dundalk, when he was too keen, is best forgiven.

17:30 Kempton - Palmarian @ 11/8

John and Thady Gosden’s PALMARIAN was gelded after a disappointing run at Kempton in April and there were some really positive signs from the son of Kingman on the opening day of Yarmouth’s Eastern Festival last month.

The three-year-old had made an encouraging start to his career when fourth of 12 over 7f at Newmarket last October - form that now reads very well with the three that finished in front of him that day all having won races since and now officially rated 96, 90 and 99 respectively.

Sadly for connections of Palmarian, the wheels rather fell off in two subsequent outings, including when tried in a hood and dropped to 6f.

However, he’s been given plenty of time off and that patience, alongside his medical procedure, looks to have paid dividends and he may now be able to confirm his early promise.

He’s rated just 75 and, with last month’s comeback likely to have brought him on a good deal from a physical perspective, he should be well up to making his presence felt under William Buick.

18:00 Kempton - Ten Pounds @ 5/4

The Harry Charlton-trained TEN POUNDS is one of the better treated at the weights for this conditions event and a reproduction of the form he showed when fourth in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket should be good enough to see him come home in front.

Unbeaten in two starts on the AW, both successes coming over 7f at Newcastle last season, he won on his reappearance over that trip at Newmarket in April, making all of the running off a mark of 99.

He’s not been able to add to that in three subsequent outings, but he’s run some excellent races in defeat, including when third of the 28 runners when dropped back to 6f in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

He wasn’t quite at that level in the Bunbury Cup, but kept on nicely for fourth behind More Thunder, who has franked the form in no uncertain terms by winning the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on his next start.
