Horse Racing Tips: True Love at Del Mar

We have a mixture of flat and jumps racing across the UK and Ireland on Friday, with six meetings taking place, while there’s also top quality racing from The Breeders Cup meeting at Del Mar in the US.

15:05 Uttoxeter - Lump Sump @ 1/1

This looks like a useful beginner’s chase on paper, featuring smart hurdlers tackling fences for the first time.

Jax Junior is one to keep onside, though he may need further before fully coming into his own over fences.

Lump Sum is the standout of these, rated 146 over hurdles. He won the Dovecote as a novice before stepping up into open company, finishing second to Sir Gino in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth and runner-up again to Joyuese in the Grade 2 William Hill Hurdle at Newbury.

A strong traveller with plenty of speed, he should transfer his hurdling form to fences effectively.

Sam Thomas will be looking to build on last season, and with a good record fresh, Lump Sum looks the one to beat on the way to bigger targets this season.

21:45 Del Mar - True Love @ 10/3

Aidan O’Brien heads to Del Mar with a strong team for this year’s Breeders’ Cup, and True Love could get him off to a flying start in the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

The No Nay Never filly caught the eye in her first two starts, finishing second to Gstaad and Lady Iman, before confirming her talent with a convincing victory in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. She backed that up over 6f in the Group 2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh, travelling smoothly and pulling clear in impressive fashion.

Runner-up Puerto Rico has since enhanced the form with wins in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes and two French Group 1s.

Her only defeat came in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, when she was subsequently found to be lame, but she returned to top form to win the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, showing her usual early speed.

Dropping back to 5f should play to her strengths, and she looks a filly of real class.
