Newcastle races scaled

It is all Flat racing in the UK and Ireland on Friday with three meetings taking place across the afternoon.

First they go off at Newcastle for the all-weather championship finals, which gets under way at 13:15, before they race at the Curragh in Ireland from 13:22, while more all-weather action at Lingfield opens up at 13:30. Amongst our Friday fancies is one for trainer Jamie Osbourne and his star three-year-old, who can bounce back to winning ways.

13:50 Newcastle - Ten Carat Harry @ 15/2

The All-Weather finals day returns to Newcastle this Good Friday with a host of competitive action for punters to get stuck into.

The first selection comes from the second race of the day and Ten Carat Harry heads into Friday’s 3 Year Old Championship Final at Newcastle as a formidable contender.

The Jamie Osbourne-trained runner has been ultra consistent this winter campaign and has already proven himself at this course when a decisive winner on Trials Day in January.

That was his fifth win in a row before a step up in class and trip proved too much for the three-year-old last time out.

Despite failing to maintain his perfect all-weather record, it was nevertheless a fine effort which stands him in good stead coming into this championship race; running off the same mark of 97.

Although he is conceding weight to the field, his strong finish to races gives him an excellent chance of winning this final.

13:57 Curragh - Staysound Susie @ 9/2

The second race on Friday afternoon at the Curragh is a competitive fillies handicap over six furlongs and for many of the runners, it marks the start of their season.

However, Staysound Susie enters the race looking to maintain her good form from this campaign.

Andrew Slattery’s five-year-old has enjoyed a good start to this season and was much improved last time out when finishing third over five furlongs at this venue. She showed a good turn of foot at the finish and flew home strongly.

Staysound Susie is up 1lb for that performance to a mark of 83 which looks to be slightly on the stiff side for her, but she looks to be an improving mare and the step back up to six furlongs can see her go well.

14:25 Newcastle - Stateira @ 6/4

The Fillies and Mares Championship has seen a host of competitive contests in the past, including the well-regarded Highfield Princess’ victory in 2022.

Despite last year's winner throwing up a huge 200/1 surprise, I am looking a lot closer to the head of the market for this renewal and it looks difficult to oppose Stateira for Andrew Balding.

The four-year-old arrives at Newcastle boasting a flawless 2-2 record at this course including her emphatic win for the final’s trial back in January.

Balding’s filly demonstrated an impressive turn of foot that day and was able to kick on readily under Oisin Murphy and cruise to a four-length victory.

Murphy is set to renew the partnership with Statiera once more, which provides a further boost to her chances.

It is important to note that her performance last time out hasn’t gone unnoticed with the handicapper raising her mark by 10lb to 96. However, there is every chance the filly has the ability to defy the sharp rise in the weights and return to the winners’ enclosure once more.
