Three card brag

One trainer who will be delighted with the busy Monday morning scratches is Gordon Elliott. He has a real chance with a very lightly-weighted Three Card Brag who comes in with decent form and a price to attract the eye of each-way punters.

The eight-year-old has made the field, but can he be involved coming to the line? Let’s review his recent form and check out his latest Grand National Odds…

When I first started compiling these Grand National profiles last week, Gordon Elliott looked set to come to Aintree with a trio of long shots and having to leave his top entry at home.

Three Card Brag needed at least five horses to get scratched to make the field but a flurry of activity on that front has given this eight-year-old a spot in the final 34. Elliott will be thanking his lucky stars, with this runner having real potential.

If we go back through his past seven starts, only once has he failed to place. That is the type of statistic that jumps out when looking for a relatively big price to earn some money back from an each-way bet.

The only time he failed was in a big Class I at Punchestown just after Christmas when he actually still led three out before making a slight mistake and weakening down the straight. That was disappointing but still encouraging.

He backed that up with a nice win at Navan and this time there was no sign of weakness coming to the line. Another mistake scuppered his chance last time out but he would still rally for third having led for the majority of the race.

Jumping mistakes are undoubtedly the biggest issue for this horse heading into Saturday’s race but a clean run would give him every chance of finishing high up. With Betfred paying out seven places online on Saturday, there will be worse each-way bets placed in this one.
