There’s a fantastic eight-race extravaganza from beautiful Thirsk on Friday late-afternoon/early evening, August 18th. The action takes place between 4.18pm and 8.20pm.

Many top northern yards and jocks are involved, no doubt flexing their muscles in readiness for next week’s Ebor Festival at York.

4.18 Sailthisshipalone @ 9/4

A little novice stakes race which should prove to be most informative, going forward. My selection is a Richard Fahey-trained, Oisin Orr-ridden horse who ran a cracker last time at York on only his second racecourse appearance.

He’s entitled to come on for that and finished well on that occasion over Friday’s 7f trip.

A rival that day, Apiarist, re-opposes for Kevin Ryan and jockey Tom Eaves. He looked to be going well on the Knavesmire until folding late in the piece, while the selection was doing his best work late on. Sonmarg has a tough task under a penalty for a narrow last-time out success at Windsor.

8.20 Arranmore each-way @ 5/1

Arranmore is an experienced 6-yr-old son of Oasis Dream, and is knocking very loudly on the door of late off this kind of mark (72). This represents a slight drop in grade from recent efforts, and though not terribly well drawn, he gets Paul Mulrennan once again.

The excellent northern-based pilot knows the horse well and as we’re paying 4 places each-way I’d say that’s the way to play this one, at what’s an each-way price.
