We assess the chances of Gavin Cromwell’s horse emerging victorious as we look at Stumptown’s Grand National Odds and what he’s been doing recently on the track…

1-1-1-1 - that is the type of recent record that even a layman will understand is pretty darned good. Four wins on the spin makes Stumptown the horse in the best form on paper heading into Saturday’s Grand National at Aintree.

Last May he won at Punchestown in the Donohue Marquees Cross Country Chase. He returned to the same venue to kick off this jumps season with another victory, this time in the Colm Quinn BMW Risk Of Thunder Chase, once again looking comfortable and proved that he could still go coming down the stretch towards the line.

Then it was over to Cheltenham and more good times. In the Glenfarclas, he was going stride-for-stride with Mister Coffey before cleverly making his move at the last moment to end up a length clear.

At the festival itself, he went off as the 5/2 favourite in the Cross Country and never looked remotely in trouble, ending up seven lengths clear as his expected rival, Galvin, was pulled-up before the last and Mister Coffey failed to show anywhere near the form that saw him go close in December.

So it would be fair to say that there aren’t many red flags here. This is a really strong looking eight-year-old grey horse who will attract plenty of action in the betting market. He checks every box, is in a rich vein of form, has plenty of stamina and has a trainer who has been hot recently in Gavin Cromwell, and who is coming in off the back of a strong Cheltenham Festival.

A Cheltenham Gold Cup/Grand National double akin to the wonderful Tiger Roll certainly doesn’t seem fanciful. Very much a live contender who could easily be the betting favourite come post time.
