St Leger Antepost Tips 2024: Camelot colt stands out at 20/1

The Betfred St Leger - the fifth and final Classic of the British flat season - is just over a week away and I believe I've found an excellent bit of value ahead of the race at Doncaster on September 14.
Read on for my St Leger Antepost Tips 2024.
St Leger Antepost Tips 2024
- Deira Mile @ 20/1
Unsurprisingly, Aidan O'Brien dominates the antepost market for this year's Betfred St Leger. At time of publication, the top three in the betting all hail from Ballydoyle and the 54-year-old trainer is responsible for a further six at bigger prices.
They're not all going to run, though. It's already been reported earlier this week that Los Angeles, who is probably the best of the bunch, is likely bound for the Irish Champion Stakes instead.
Will Illinois, Jan Brueghel and Grosvenor Square, the 1-2-3 in the market, all line up? I think the former two are extremely likely, but there has to be a good chance the latter is kept for the Irish St Leger at the Curragh just 24 hours later, given he won last month's trial by 20 lengths.
That would surely impact the betting - and the one I'd expect to shorten most as a result is DEIRA MILE.
In fact, I'd say 20/1 about Owen Burrows' Camelot colt is unlikely to last even if the aforementioned trio are declared. He's already trading at 16s, 14s and even as short as 12s with other firms.
But can he actually go and win the race? I believe so.
The former Charlie Johnston inmate joined Burrows' yard in October last year and just a couple of weeks later finished fourth of seven, beaten under three lengths, in the G1 Futurity Trophy Stakes at Donny, massively outperforming his odds of 50/1 having failed to win any of the first three starts of his career.
Subsequently put away for the winter, he returned this term with an extremely-comfortable triumph in a Windsor novice in April, before a fantastic run in the Betfred Derby on the opening day of June.
He was fourth at Epsom, seven-and-a-half lengths behind the outstanding City Of Troy and staying on strongly behind the third-placed Los Angeles. Remember what I said about him being the best of Ballydoyle's current entries?
Deira Mile missed his intended engagement in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York's Ebor Festival on vet's orders, so connections opted to give him a spin round Windsor just a few days later as a prep for Doncaster.
He was beaten by the 102-rated Sea Of Roses and while that is disappointing at face value, it was a slowly-run race over an inadequate 1m3½f on a sharp track and that must be accounted for. It was pleasing to see him finish so strongly, however, and that ought to have put him spot on for the big day.
It will be his first attempt over 1m6f, which on all known evidence should bring out the best of him, and he's also proven on deep ground which is always a possibility at this time of year.
I suggest taking 20/1 now, for I can see those odds being closer to 10s come raceday.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
