Saturday racing tips with owen mcmahon

Another action-packed Saturday is in store, with Flat fare from the Curragh, Newmarket, Redcar, Ascot, Southwell and Wolverhampton alongside a Jumps card from Gowran Park.

I've studied the various meetings and come up with a few Saturday racing tips - including an 6/5 NAP - for you to consider.

Saturday Racing Tips - October 5, 2024

  • 13:50 Ascot - Relief Rally @ 6/5
  • 15:20 Redcar - Francisco's Piece @ 7/1
  • 16:00 Longchamp - Caius Chorister @ 15/2
  • 16:40 Southwell - Tawajjah @ 7/4

13:50 Ascot - Relief Rally @ 6/5

I strongly fancy RELIEF RALLY to take this Listed sprint that opens the card at Ascot on Saturday.

Following a 126-day layoff, William Haggas' three-year-old Kodiac filly was a fine second in a Group 3 at Newbury a couple weeks ago on her first run over the minimum trip since bolting up in last year's Super Sprint Stakes.

I see no reason why she won't confirm placings with Democracy Dilemma off better terms, while Go Athletico, Miaharris and Rumstar are all hard to advise on current form.

Beautiful Diamond is a credible opponent, but unlike the selection she's unproven on testing ground and she's penalised for a Listed triumph earlier this year.

I'll be disappointed if Relief Rally can't get the job done here. She's a solid bet for as long as she's odds-against.

15:20 Redcar - Francisco's Piece @ 7/1

Billboard Star is likely to prove popular ahead of the Two Year Old Trophy - a Listed affair over six furlongs - but I want to take him on. Eve Johnson Houghton's gelding has been on the go since June and this will be his seventh run, coming just two weeks after a Group 2 on heavy ground.

Of the other 19 runners, I think FRANCISCO'S PIECE represents outstanding value.

Adrian Keatley's colt, who readily won a Listed race at Chantilly in June, was just touched off by Karl Burke's King Of Light in a handicap at Haydock just eight days ago, conceding 11lbs.

Given King Of Light was previously under a length behind Uncle Don - 9/2 on Saturday - off level weights, and with the selection receiving four pounds, I think the market is all wrong.

As far as I'm concerned, Francisco's Piece deserves to be second favourite and he ought to make a bold bid with conditions in his favour (his form on soft or worse reads 122).

Betfred are offering your stake back (up to £10) as a free bet if your selection in this race finishes second.

16:00 Longchamp - Caius Chorister @ 15/2

We go to Paris next, as Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe weekend gets underway.

My sole interest at Longchamp on Saturday is David Menuisier's CAIUS CHORISTER in the G1 Prix de Royallieu over 1m6f.

If you ignore her run in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot over an extreme 2m4f, the five-year-old daughter of Golden Horn has been very consistent this season despite not getting her ideal conditions.

The mare's form on soft or worse since the beginning of last year reads 2312 - including a four-length Group 3 success in at Saint-Cloud in France - but the majority of her runs this term have been on good or better.

Despite that, she was runner-up to Coltrane and Sweet William by just a head in a couple of Group 3s at the start of the campaign, and she was a good second to Willie Mullins' 2023 Ebor hero Absurde in the Chester Stakes last time out.

She has three lengths to find with Henry de Bromhead's Term Of Endearment on the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, but drastically different ground and James Doyle in the plate offers optimism that she can overturn that margin.

Betfred are offering your stake back (up to £10) as a free bet if your selection in this race finishes second.

16:00 Longchamp - Winner Caius Chorister

16:40 Southwell - Tawajjah @ 7/4

Sardinian Warrior is respected ahead of this mile-long novice stakes, but he has a six-pound penalty to overcome on his first run in 160 days for the out-of-form Gosdens.

Therefore, I'm taking him on with TAWAJJAH for Roger Varian.

The three-year-old son of Frankel was a promising-enough seventh in a warm Kempton novice late last year and after a subsequent 306-day break he was narrowly beaten in a similar heat at Windsor last month.

He showed stacks of improvement between those runs and he ought to take another sizeable step forward with that under his belt.

Remove the aforementioned Sardinian Warrior and I'd make the selection pretty short, so he rates good value at the quoted price.

16:40 Southwell - Winner Tawajjah
