Saturday racing tips with owen mcmahon

Unless Storm Éowyn has something to say about it, there'll be six meetings to enjoy on Saturday - four over Jumps and a couple of all-weather affairs on the level.

I've studied the cards and produced six Saturday racing tips, including a 6/5 Nap from across the Irish Sea.

Saturday Racing Tips - January 25, 2025

  • 13:38 Fairyhouse - Fancy Girl @ 10/3
  • 13:50 Cheltenham - Ginny's Destiny @ 3/1
  • 14:05 Doncaster - Jig's Forge @ 9/2
  • 14:13 Fairyhouse - Kawaboomga @ 6/5
  • 15:57 Fairyhouse - Theflyingking @ 15/8

13:38 Fairyhouse - Fancy Girl @ 10/3

Willie Mullins saddles the top three in the market for the G3 Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle and jockey bookings suggests Aurora Vega is the pick of the bunch.

She has lots of ability but doesn't always put it together - while the form of Baby Kate's win at Naas last month has hardly been advertised in the meantime.

Despite trading bigger than her stablemates, FANCY GIRL is the one for me.

She didn't jump great on her hurdling debut at Cork but still absolutely bolted up, pulling 13 lengths clear of the runner-up Full Of Life - a £70k buy for Henry de Bromhead who gave a decent account of herself in defeat at Punchestown last week. The rest of the field were a further 16 lengths behind.

That was her first appearance in 597 days and, providing the dreaded bounce factor isn't in play, she's open to significant improvement.

I can see her bouncing out in front under Danny Mullins and trying to make all. Hopefully she never sees another rival.

13:50 Cheltenham - Ginny's Destiny @ 3/1

GINNY'S DESTINY, runner-up in the defunct Turners Novices' Chase at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival, has been disappointing so far this season, but I give Paul Nicholls' nine-year-old every chance of bouncing back at Cheltenham on Saturday.

The son of Yeats clearly takes a bit of getting fit, as his form after a layoff of more than 200 days reads 47P, so his DNF in the Paddy Power Gold Cup here in November can be easily forgiven.

His subsequent effort in the G2 Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon was much more like it - and he can take another step forward as he returns to HQ in handicap company.

He's been dropped two pounds for his exploits in Cambridgeshire, meaning he races off a mark (152) just five pounds higher than when winning this race last year. If he can get back to something like, he's the one they all have to beat.

Iroko would be a dangerous rival if on song, but he's working back from the Grand National and with the weights set to be released very soon, it wouldn't be clever to force a rise out of the handicapper.

There's others dangers, of course, but if Ginny's Destiny is starting to peak for the season then I fancy him to do the business.

14:05 Doncaster - Jig's Forge @ 9/2

Back to Doncaster, where a chance is taken on JIG'S FORCE for Ben Pauling in the G2 River Don Novices' Hurdle.

He's the least experienced of the eight hopefuls, with just one run under rules in the book, but he boasts the most potential as far as I'm concerned after his fairly impressive debut at Ffos Las back in November.

He wasn't for catching out in front, pulling six lengths clear of the runner-up Blue Las, who won next time out - albeit at 2/9f - by a whopping 26 lengths. The fourth-placed Andy Amo, rated 111, also franked the form by a maiden at Uttoxeter on New Year's Eve.

That looks relatively strong form and there ought to be much more to come from the son of Westerner, who should appreciate this test as a PTP winner over three miles on heavy ground.

The worry is that it comes too soon in his career, but at 9/2 it's worth chancing he can provide his trainer with a fourth River Don in nine years.

Betfred are offering your stake back (up to £10) as a free bet if your selection in this race finishes 2nd.

14:05 Doncaster - Winner Jig's Forge

14:13 Fairyhouse - Kawaboomga @ 6/5

My Nap of the Day is Willie Mullins' KAWABOOMGA in this highly-informative maiden hurdle over the minimum trip.

The five-year-old son of Polish sire Tunis was bought by JP McManus after a couple of promising runs in France, and had a lofty reputation coming into the season.

He was pitched in against Kopek Des Bordes, who is right up there with Mullins' best novice hurdlers, on Irish debut at Leopardstown on Boxing Day, shaping highly-encouragingly in defeat.

Ridden off the pace, he was given plenty of ground to make up on the aforementioned winner and eventual third, who set the fractions in front, and was closing with every stride, finishing just under three lengths behind come the line.

Kopek Des Bordes jumped deplorably so admittedly I don't think that margin of defeat paints a complete picture, but Kawaboomga is clearly a useful individual both on and off the track.

He should progress plenty for the run and is taken to down both Koktail Divin and William Munny. The former brings a very interesting formline to the table, but I don't think the step back to two miles will suit and Henry de Bromhead's runners are struggling at the moment.

As for Barry Connell's horse, I suspect he might be a little bit overrated. He looked a bit of rocket when winning a bumper at Naas back in February but was well-beaten in the Grade 1 at Punchestown and was seven lengths behind Workahead on the same card Kawaboomga ran on at Leopardstown over Christmas. That rival is fancied for the Supreme, but at the same time he was beaten nine lengths by Jasmin De Vaux previously, so I'm sceptical of the form.

I think Kopek Des Bordes is very, very good and the selection must be well above average himself to get so close to him. He can get off the mark here before a likely tilt at one of the novice hurdles at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival.

15:57 Fairyhouse - Theflyingking @ 15/8

Finally, I'm giving THEFLYINGKING another strong chance in the bumper.

I was very keen on Gordon Elliott's son of Jukebox Jury, who I know shows plenty at home, at Down Royal on Boxing Day but he was too green on ground quicker than ideal to do himself justice. Still, he was only narrowly beaten by a potentially useful rival, and the rest of the field - including Strong Link who brought a good piece of form to the table - were over 14 lengths behind.

Conditions will be a lot more ideal at Fairyhouse on Saturday and with that run under his belt, he should take the world of beating.

Walks In June is entitled to give him something to think about, but De Bromhead's form is a concern - while Fillyoureye can't be ruled out given connections. That being said, it's been an underwhelming season so far for Mr. Mullins in this division and little has been made of this particular runner. A market check is advised, though.
