We’ve seven races to enjoy at Sandown on Wednesday afternoon, with the highlight being the Fortune Stakes – a Listed contest over a mile – at 15:40.

I’m rather sweet on one for that, while there’s another who runs earlier on the card that’s caught my eye.

Ralph Beckett’s WHISKEY PETE is yet to win in two starts, but that’s hardly a negative when you look at the strength of those contests.

He was narrowly beaten by subsequent Group 3 winner and Dewhurst hopeful Aablan on debut at Newmarket in July – and last time out at Haydock he was a staying-on third in a race that’s worked out brilliantly.

This maiden looks a significantly easier assignment for the son of Night Of Thunder, who should have no issues with trip/ground based on form/breeding.

I’ll be pretty disappointed if he can’t get the better of his four rivals with form already in the book, and any one of the five newcomers would have to be way above average – which they don’t look on paper – if the selection runs to form.

With the fantastic Rossa Ryan in the plate, he rates a confident selection to kick things off.

15:40 – Knight @ 5/2

Bravery will certainly be required to win the Fortune Stakes at Sandown on Wednesday.

The Surrey venue is one of the most testing in the country, especially when the ground is soft (as it currently is), which is ideal for the appropriately-named KNIGHT, a Group 2 winner on heavy as a juvenile.

His most recent effort, when runner-up to Angel Bleu in the G2 Celebration Mile Stakes at Goodwood last month, was a career-best performance, and he looks near-enough certain to go well here – something which can’t be said about a few of his nine rivals.

Chindit ran just 11 days ago and has little to no form on soft ground. Eydon and Sir Busker both have long lay-offs to overcome – while the other six are yet to post an effort that compares to the selection’s latest one.

I rate Simon & Ed Crisford’s three-year-old’s chances highly.
