It had been a long time coming but, finally, just after Christmas last year, Perceval Legallois finished first in a big race to signal that maybe, just maybe, he was ready to take that next step and become a top jumps horse.
That victory in a Class I race over in Ireland at Leopardstown was a relief to all concerned. Much had been expected from Perceval Legallois and it just wasn’t all coming together as hoped for his connections. Yet that victory was decisive and we saw plenty of late speed coming to the line. There was no doubting that stamina was an issue and winning so well at 17/2 certainly caught the eye.
It was a couple of months later, though, that we all saw that it wasn’t a flash in the pan. Another victory in a Class I at Leopardstown, once more keeping on well throughout the run-in, showed plenty and suddenly his Grand National price was tumbling. If you’d been a backer on the AntePost then you’d be delighted as there is every chance he goes off in the top five in the betting come 16:00 on Saturday afternoon.
Remember, Gavin Cromwell and JP McManus decided not to send Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin to Aintree for the Grand National. He was set to be the shortest-priced favourite in the history of the race but they chose to sit this one out and maybe it is because they really like the chances of stable-mate Perceval Legallois.
There is no doubt that he has the momentum in the market and there’ll be plenty of Irish money backing him after those two highly-impressive victories at Leopardstown in recent times. Undoubtedly a legitimate contender.
