There are seven British and Irish cards on Friday, from afternoon Flat to evening jumps action. Among them is the middle day of Newcastle's Northumberland Plate meeting, an eight-race programme which runs from 16:23 - 20:20.

We have selected three Newcastle runners worth following from today's horse races, including the jet-setting mare Tiffany as she aims to return to Britain with a bang.

Newcastle Tips - June 28

  • 16:55 – Elegant Erin @ 5/1
  • 17:25 – Prince Of Zenda @ 9/2
  • 18:00 – Tiffany @ 4/1

Horse Racing Odds

16:55 – Elegant Erin @ 5/1

This is a drop in class for ELEGANT ERIN and she can take advantage at a track that should suit her late-closing style.

This seven-year-old often does her winning at tracks with stiff finishes, which matches the description of Newcastle. She ran a cracking race at Carlisle last time, which has an equally testing climb to the line.

That was a 0-80 handicap and Elegant Erin has not been touched by the handicapper. She now goes down further in the handicap scale, this is a 0-75. In the four weeks since, she has had a wind operation which could help her go through with her finishing effort. That is something that has held her back in the past.

A draw in stall 13 is often the right sort of place to be at Newcastle and Elegant Erin has few excuses.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred will be paying four places instead of three at 1/5 odds.

17:25 – Prince Of Zenda @ 9/2

Younger horses do well in this valuable handicap, with three of its seven winners being four-year-olds. PRINCE OF ZENDA is one of two horses of that age in this year's race and should be on your shortlist.

This horse was progressive on the all-weather over the winter, including a win over 6f here in January. He built on that when a front-running second back here in May. That was a valuable contest and his run since can be forgiven. It is fairly clear by now that 7f is far enough for him.

The drop to 5f is interesting. Prince Of Zenda has never run over the minimum trip, but he has tons of speed and Newcastle puts too much emphasis on stamina for the pure rockets anyway.

His rider Paul Mulrennan is the top jockey at the track and won this race last year. Prince Of Zenda can help Mulrennan make it two in a row.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred will be paying four places instead of three at 1/5 odds.

18:00 – Tiffany @ 4/1

At first glance, TIFFANY is another Sir Mark Prescott-trained handicap improver. Her story is a little more compelling than that though, and she can enhance her record with a Listed win here.

Since embarking on her career out of novices, Tiffany has won four of her five starts. The second was a handicap over ten furlongs at this track. Her only defeat was to Spirit Dancer at Windsor. That horse won a Group 3 next time and landed the Bahrain International Trophy on his next outing.

Tiffany has enhanced her reputation too in the meantime. She went to Hanover the following month and won a Listed race. Then, after a winter break, she went back to Germany and landed another Listed race at Baden Baden.

Her most recent win was by a wide margin and Tiffany could end up in sex-restricted Group races. As she climbs, she can land this Listed prize.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred will be paying four places instead of three at 1/5 odds.
