Newmarket Tips: Cogitate on the up

Amongst the five scheduled meetings across Britain and Ireland on Thursday will be an afternoon card from Newmarket.
It's a seven-race offering from 13:50-17:20 at Headquarters, with conditions forecast to be 'good to firm.’ The highlight of the card is the Empress Fillies' Stakes, a Listed sprint over six furlongs. Our Newmarket tips feature a filly with some fine form in the book and a progressive four-year-old looking to back up a win last time out.

15:00 - Miraculous @ 17/2
After two novice races, there is an intriguing handicap sprint to kickstart the Newmarket card, and Roger Varian’s MIRACULOUS could have more room for improvement than most.
The son of Too Darn Hot had some respectable efforts as a novice, with form figures of 1,2.2 before making his handicap debut over five furlongs at Windsor earlier this month.
That trip may have just been on the sharp side and the gelding finished seventh, but Varian’s charge has only raced four times and could be a big improver against some exposed horses.
The step back up in trip to six furlongs looks set to suit and it would be no surprise to see Miraculous getting his head in front.

15:35 - Argentine Tango @ 15/2
The feature of Newmarket’s card is an intriguing Fillies’ Listed race that will be contested between plenty of lightly-raced types.
One two-year-old that makes a real impression on form, however, is ARGENTINE TANGO.
Tim Easterby makes the long journey to HQ for this race and his filly’s recent record is certainly eye-catching.
Argentine Tango was narrowly beaten by Ali Shuffle, who went on to win the Lily Agnes, on debut, before coming up short in a Group 3 in France on ground that was probably too soft.
Easterby’s charge then won at Pontefract before being edged out at Carlisle - where he took on subsequent Albany winner Venetian Sun.
Argentine Tango followed that by winning the Hilary Needler at Beverley and she could prove there is still plenty to come on this long trip to Newmarket.

16:10 - Cogitate @ 15/2
COGITATE is clearly a horse who has had his fair share of issues but this four-year-old was clearly highly thought of after winning on debut, going off joint-favourite for the Acomb Stakes in 2023.
Things had not worked out since then but Charles Hills persisted with the horse and he was rewarded last time out when he won at Salisbury on his first outing in a Class 4 event.
The gelding is up in grade after that win, but given the impressive nature of the success, he could still prove hard to beat.
