Newmarket tips: Equiano Springs to continue HQ love affair

There’s a six-race card at HQ on Friday evening, with racing getting underway at Newmarket at 5:25pm.
The three handicaps that conclude the card look set to provide the best betting opportunities and we have a trio of selections at the Suffolk venue.
Newmarket Tips Friday
19.10 Newmarket - Equiano Springs @ 6/1
Equiano Springs has won six times at Newmarket, twice on the July course, and all of the veteran’s last five victories have come at the Suffolk venue.
Tom Tate’s charge finished fifth over course and distance 20 days ago, but the 10-year-old didn’t get a clear run on that occasion and he is better judged on his excellent second at Haydock last month.
That run certainly suggested that Equiano Springs retains enough ability to win off his reduced mark and this evening’s set up should suit the ten-year-old perfectly.
The Thames Boatman is a fiercely keen performer, who may be allowed to stride on, Dashing Dick made all to win last time out, Kodiac Thriller often forces the pace and Antiphon won’t be far off the speed.
The likely strong tempo will suit hold-up performer Equiano Springs and a big run is expected.
19.45 Newmarket - Jazzy Angel @ 9/2
Tronido goes for the hat-trick in the seven furlong fillies’ handicap at 19:40, but Simon Dow’s charge may have to play second fiddle to fellow all-weather winner Jazzy Angel.
The three-year-old scored at Wolverhampton last time out, after finishing second and winning at Southwell and those narrow-margin successes have seen Harry Eustace’s runner rise only nine pounds in the weights.
Jazzy Angel has still looked a little inexperienced in her short career and there could well be more progress to come on only her seventh start and third try on turf.
20.16 Newmarket - Volto Di Medusa @ 8/1
Volto Di Medusa can benefit from a drop in trip in the one-mile-and-two-furlong handicap at 20:16. Rae Guest’s runner stepped up two furlongs at Epsom last time out, but the three-year-old appeared to be found out by that trip on soft ground.
The gelding was hampered in that contest on Downs, but it was clear that he would be more effective over a shorter trip.
Volto Di Medusa was dropped a pound for that run and he is now three pounds lower than when winning at Bath on stable debut earlier this year.
The prices appear to underestimate the chances of Guest’s runner returning to a more suitable distance.
