Newcastle races scaled

With jumps action taking a backseat in the week before the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, punters can look towards the all-weather action on Tuesday.

Our focus is on Newcastle’s seven-race card, where they go from 13:50 to 16:52, with the Class 3 Handicap at 15:22 the standout contest.

Newcastle Tips - Tuesday, March 4

  • 13:50 - Media Mogul @ 6/4
  • 15:22 - Brewing @ 2/1
  • 16:22 - Westmorian @ 4/1

Today's Horse Races

13:50 - Media Mogul @ 6/4

The first race looks to be a trappy betting heat - the rest of the card is not too dissimilar - but slight preference is for Media Mogul, who shaped with real promise last time.

His first three runs all came at around a mile and he showed little to nothing over that distance. However, upped to 1m4f at Kempton last time, he looked much better when finishing fourth, even keeping on towards the finish.

That was his handicap debut and Ed Walker’s four-year-old may have fared better had he not hit traffic early on, too.

A 1lb drop following that effort could bring further improvement and the booking of Billy Loughnane, who had won 19 per cent of his races over the 14 days until Sunday, may be the difference maker.

15:22 - Brewing @ 2/1

There are plenty of plausible contenders for the feature race but there is a feeling that the tactics of some of his rivals could play right into Brewing’s hands.

Nikovo, Catch The Paddy and Lady Flora have all done plenty of winning over further distances than this 7f trip, meaning they will look to go fast from the start in a bid to utilise their stamina.

However, that should only spur Brewing on to a fourth course-and-distance win. A 2lb rise following his January win here is unlikely to be enough to stop William Haggas’s charge, especially as his biggest rival, William Dewhirst, who has won five of his seven C&D runs, will be competing under a 5lb penalty.

This is an Extra Place race, meaning that Betfred is paying 3 Places (1/5 Odds) instead of 2.

16:22 - Westmorian @ 4/1

Grant Tuer must be on the radar of punters with a preference for outsiders following Mersea’s 50/1 win at this track at the end of February, and his best dark horse on Tuesday’s card is undoubtedly Westmorian.

He has been off since June but has finished in the top three on two occasions following lengthy breaks in the past and could easily outrun his odds by going well fresh again.

Westmorian is back to a mark of 70 - the same rating he was when winning over course and distance 12 months ago - and he appeals as an each-way wager on Tyneside.
