Newcastle races scaled

Newcastle stages a nine-race card on Thursday evening with the action running from 16:25 until 20:30.

It promises to be an enthralling meeting in the north east and we have three selections to follow for our Newcastle tips, including one for Ed Bethell in the sixth race on the card.

  • 19:30 - Game Management @ 20/1
  • 20:30 - Borough @ 18/1

Today's Horse Races

19:00 - Marianglas @ 8/1

Marianglas showed promise on her first career start at this track in November last year when finishing fifth and she followed that up with an improved third-place finish when returning to the track in April.

Ed Bethell’s charge hasn’t built on those runs this season, but there was definite promise at Wolverhampton last time out when sixth of 11 runners and the daughter of Almanzor may have been overlooked in the betting.

The sharp nature and short straight of Wolverhampton wouldn’t have played to the strengths of Marianglas and she should be far better suited to the long run at Newcastle.

The three-year-old has dropped in the handicap, is unexposed after only six career starts and could outrun her odds in this 7f handicap.

This is an Extra Place Race so Betfred will be paying 4 Places at 1/5 Odds instead of 3.

19:30 - Game Management @ 20/1

Game Management is down to a mark of 56 from an opening rating of 72, and while a series of disappointing efforts have resulted in that drop, there are reasons to think Kevin Ryan’s charge may put up a big run in the mile handicap at 19:30.

The three-year-old showed plenty of promise when finishing second in a novice race at Thirsk, suggesting the son of Nathaniel had plenty of ability.

Game Management finished down the field at Ripon last time out, where he didn’t appear to be in love with the undulating track, but Ryan’s runner was traveling with some purpose in the middle stages of the race.

Ryan has given the gelding a wind op following that outing and there is every chance we could see a major turnaround in Game Management’s performance off a break today.

This is an Extra Place Race so Betfred will be paying 4 Places at 1/5 Odds instead of 3.

20:30 - Borough @ 18/1

Borough enjoyed a purple patch when scoring at Ayr and Hamilton last year and although a leap of faith has to be taken for the final race at Newcastle, Iain Jardine’s runner is worth a punt.

The four-year-old was rated 73 this time last year and his winning run started off a mark of 58.

Borough is down to a rating of 56 this evening and it wasn’t that long ago that Jardine’s runner was laughing at that sort of mark.

Clearly, the last three runs have been disappointing, but Borough has been slowly away on each of those starts and if he can get out of the blocks quickly, there is a chance he could cause a shock.
