Newbury racecourse

Midweek racing action brings with it five meetings across the UK and Ireland on Wednesday. There are jumps fixtures at Lingfield, Newbury and Ludlow, while all-weather action stems from Kempton and Dundalk.

Newbury's seven-race card runs from 12:05-15:35 and conditions are forecast to be 'good to soft-soft in places on the hurdle course'. We've picked out three horses to follow at the Berkshire track.

Today's Horse Races

13:15 Newbury – Kyntara @ 9/4

KYNTARA got his career back on track last season after joining Mel Rowley from the Kim Bailey yard.

He posted figures of 11222 over hurdles, including finishing second in the Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival before taking a fall in a Grade 1 novice event at Aintree on his final start.

He does have experience over fences, finishing second behind Jet Plane at Hereford (3m1f, good to soft) back in November 2022.

He doesn't have major miles on the clock for an eight-year-old and has a good record when fresh, including winning off a similar break last season. Sam Twiston-Davies rides for the first time here, another positive in his favour, and a first victory over fences may beckon.

14:25 Newbury – General Medrano @ 2/1

Two-miles-and-half-a-furlong is the trip in store for the five runners in this handicap chase and last-time-out C&D winner GENERAL MEDRANO may be good enough to follow up for trainer Emma Lavelle.

He won twice over fences at the start of last season, scoring at Uttoxeter and Huntingdon over 2m, and continued to hold his form in decent company thereafter.

He had a wind op in the summer and was second at Haydock (2m½f, soft) in last month's return, coming clear with Dr T J Eckleburg.

He was turned out quickly here a week later and won with lots in hand, form that looks solid after Issar D'airy finished second at Cheltenham over the weekend. He's rated 9lb higher now but appears to be finding some progress and can back up his course and distance win.

15:00 Newbury – Mylesfromwicklow @ 11/2

Dan Skelton's MYLESFROMWICKLOW ran well to be second at Market Rasen (2m5½f, good) in October and has faced a couple of very steep challenges since at Ascot.

He was sixth as Chianti Classico won the Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase in early November and then fifth as Gemirande won a 2m5f handicap chase before going on to win the December Gold Cup on his next start.

This is less demanding on paper and those runs at Ascot have allowed Mylesfromwicklow to drop a couple of pounds in the ratings, while he will also have Tristan Durrell claiming 3lb on his back. He is a consistent sort at this level and the ease in grade should see him in a good light.
