Newbury Racecourse

With four British and Irish meetings taking place across Tuesday, three of them on the turf, it's safe to say that jumps racing is back after a short enforced absence last week.

The main card on the day comes from Newbury, where they have seven races from 12:50 - 16:20 on ground forecast to be 'Good to soft-soft in places'.

We've picked out a trio to follow at the Berkshire venue, including a horse who promises to improve for this step up in trip.

Newbury Tips

  • 14:35 Newbury – King's Threshold @ 11/2
  • 15:45 Newbury – Issar D'Airy @ 5/6
  • 16:20 Newbury – Jurancon @ 11/4

14:35 Newbury – King's Threshold @ 11/2

As ever for the track, this novices' handicap chase contains plenty of potentially useful sorts. The difference here is that many of them are starting late, and in a few cases including that of the sure-to-be-popular Blairgowrie, they have been off the track for a long time.

That does not apply to KING'S THRESHOLD, who is set to improve for this longer trip.

King's Threshold is extremely stoutly bred. He is by Yeats, whose best progeny are all stayers, most famously Grand National winner Noble Yeats. His dam's side is even stouter. His half-brothers include Captain Cattistock, who won the 2022 Edinburgh National, and Bretney who won over as far as 3m5f.

King's Threshold needed 2m5f at a stiff track (Exeter) to win over hurdles and shaped like he was ready to stick to staying trips when a promising second over 2m4f at Kempton last time in November. He was off the bridle a long way out that day but stuck on in good style. This longer trip, plus Newbury's much-longer straight, will be firmly in his favour and his relative race fitness can keep him in front of those returning from lengthy absences.

15:45 Newbury – Issar D'Airy @ 5/6

It was at this course 24 days ago, on Grade 1 Challow Hurdle day, that ISSAR D'AIRY made an impressive start over fences and he can continue his bright start as a chaser here.

This tall French import has always had the look of a chaser. He won twice over hurdles, albeit never rising above a modest level. He immediately improved on that by a significant amount here last time, beating some interesting rivals into the bargain.

That race did go Issar D'Airy's way to an extent. It was well run and he extended away as others wilted. But this is a weaker race, if anything, and it is rare that progressive types like him get to drop back in grade once they have started improving. Even from an 8lb higher mark than last time, he ought to be making it two from two over fences today.

16:20 Newbury – Jurancon @ 11/4

It is now 20 years since the Pipe yard won what is now the Grand National Trial at Haydock with a horse named JURANCON. The latest Pipe runner to carry the same name suggested he could become a similarly smart type when winning on his rules debut so impressively at Chepstow last month.

That day he left a field of decent prospects trailing in his wake, as he extended away to win by eight lengths eased down. Before that, he had been similarly convincing in a point-to-point and is likely to be one of the best prospects in the yard.

The only quibble is that the ground here could be a bit livelier than for his wins. That aside, Jurancon ought to be an imposing favourite for this race, but continued fear about what some of the bigger yards might unleash on this card keeps him at a backable price.
