Newbury Tips: Gemini Star heads Thursday’s three picks

There’s a six-race card from Newbury on Thursday evening featuring five handicaps and a maiden fillies’ stakes on what should be a cracking night of action at the Berkshire venue.
The first race gets underway at 18:15, running through to the last at 20:45, and there are a trio of selections in my Newbury tips.
Newbury Tips - Thursday, July 25
19:15 - Gemini Star @ 14/1
Gemini Star has dropped to a career-low mark of 74 as the Alice Haynes-trained filly lines up in the seven-furlong handicap and takes a major drop in class.
The four-year-old has previously been rated as high as 79, but now finds herself in a 0-72 rated handicap.
Haynes’ filly is still relatively unexposed on her 11th career start, and her latest run at Haydock showed more promise than the finishing position suggested.
An 11-runner field and likely strong pace should suit Gemini Star, who is set to come with a late run, and she looks set to claim a first success since scoring on her first outing as a three-year-old in April last year.
19:45 - Surrey Belle @ 5/1
Surrey Belle bolted up on her first start over two miles at Kempton nine days ago and it’s no surprise to see Hughie Morrison back the filly up under a 5lb penalty.
The four-year-old slammed her rivals last time out and there is certainly scope for further progression over the same trip.
There are three other last-time-out winners in this 2m handicap, which will hopefully help hold up the price of Surrey Belle, and there is enough form on the turf to suggest she isn’t just an all-weather performer.
20:45 - Throubi @ 4/1
The final race on the card at 20:45 can go the way of Throubi. James Fanshawe’s lightly raced four-year-old scored for the first time in impressive style at Doncaster last month and the daughter of Teofilo can build on that success.
Throubi has gone up three pounds for that Town Moor victory, but the filly won going away last time out and it’s likely there will be more to come off a mark of 74.
