Newbury Racecourse

My priority on Thursday is the evening card at Newbury, with six races scheduled between 17:50-20:45 on ground forecast to be soft.

I've come up with a handful of Newbury tips for you to consider - including a Eve Johnson-Houghton-trained filly who's taken to follow up a highly-promising debut effort.

Newbury Tips - Thursday, July 11

  • 17:50 - Geo @ 10/3
  • 19:00 - Silent Flame @ 5/1
  • 20:10 - Tipsy Tiger @ 9/2

17:50 - Geo @ 10/3

Eve Johnson Houghton's filly GEO should have learned plenty from her debut over course and distance last month and may now be ready to put it to good use.

The Mehmas filly broke fairly well but her greenness resulted in her dropping to the rear of the 12-runner field as they reached halfway.

She then had to weave through some traffic as Charles Bishop asked for an effort and they managed to come through rivals in eye-catching fashion to finish fourth, no match for the front trio but still laying down a foundation for better to come.

That form is untested but two of the front three hold entries in big races later in the season and they were probably a fair benchmark. Harry Davies takes over in the saddle and this filly is fancied to oblige at the second time of asking.

Today's Horse Races

19:00 - Silent Flame @ 5/1

Rod Millman's mare SILENT FLAME has been a slow burner this season but her last-time-out fourth at Ffos Las (6six furlongs, good) was another move in the right direction.

She has dropped a full 10lbs in the ratings since the turf campaign started and now finds herself perched 15lb below the mark she was able to defy at Windsor (five furlongs, soft) in May last year.

She was narrowly beaten at that track off 79 soon after over today's six-furlong trip.

She was a course-and-distance scorer in the summer of 2022 and could be ready to sparkle back here, particularly should the application of first-time blinkers prove a positive. Her trainer can boast four winners from his last 13 starters for a near 31% strike rate recently.

Betfred will return your stake (up to £10) as a free bet if your selection in the 19:00 finishes 2nd.

20:10 - Tipsy Tiger @ 9/2

Giselles Defence is eight pounds well-in on official ratings, but Ian Williams' gelding is facing a third run in seven days and was held at Beverley on Saturday from this mark.

TIPSY TIGER meanwhile hasn't been spotted since finishing second at Leicester (1m2f, heavy) in late May.

She pulled a long way clear with the winner and went down battling all the way. She is rated three pounds higher now but should have a leading chance and the forecast soft ground is an obvious plus for her.
