Newbury racecourse

It’s a typically busy summer Friday in Britain and Ireland with eight meetings taking place, and there should be something for everyone.

Among them will be the Flat card from Newbury, where they have seven races from 13:50 until 17:20 on ground forecast to be good to soft (good in places). I've picked out a pair to follow for my Newbury tips for Friday, including the ultra-consistent mare Single, who represents in-form Jack Channon.

Today's Horse Races

14:25 – Winston’s Warrior @ 33/1

Charlie Hills won a division of this race last year with 14-1 newcomer Cogitate and he might be capable of landing it again with another debutant in the shape of WINSTON’S WARRIOR.

Hills has his string in good form and targets races like this at Newbury, so it looks significant that he chooses this track to introduce this 125,000gns yearling, who is by top sire Churchill.

Winston’s Warrior is the first foal of a half-sister to the useful types, Kermiyan, Kerasona, Keratiya and Kerman, and the last two named there were both winners as two-year-olds.

The selection is evidently bred to be sharp and the booking of jockey William Cox should be considered a positive, as he has a good record for the Hills stable. The rider’s strike rate jumps from five per cent in the last five seasons to 14 per cent in that period when riding for this yard.

That shows connections mean business and Winston’s Warrior can make a winning debut.

16:45 – Single @ 16/1

This 1m51/2f fillies’ handicap doesn’t appear to have many unexposed runners in the line up and it could turn out to be a battle between the proven types. None fit that bill better than the consistent mare SINGLE and she is fancied to record her second success of this season.

The seven-year-old rarely runs a bad race and has dropped to a mark only 3lb higher than when recording her last success at Nottingham last month. She showed that day how well suited she can be by big-field handicaps around a galloping left-handed track like this.

Single hasn’t faced the same test in two subsequent outings and was probably undone by slowly run races on both occasions. She was fifth in a relative sprint finish at Newmarket two starts ago and had no chance off a sedate pace at Newcastle last time.

This race might pan out better for her waiting tactics and David Probert, who was on board for her latest success at Nottingham, is back in the saddle again.

This is an Extra Place race, therefore Betfred will be paying 4 places instead of 3 at 1/5 odds.
