It would be fair to say that Nassalam has impressed mightily through the majority of this season. Victory in the Welsh Grand National itself is a mighty fine achievement but when you consider that his winning margin was no fewer than 34 lengths, then you can see why punters sat up and took notice.

The conditions were abject on Boxing Day for that race, so the going was soft. The wind was howling and the rain was oppressive but Nassalam showed that he was up for the race and promptly tore the field apart. It saw his rating fly up and suddenly, from being a fringe contender for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, the decision was made to point towards the Gold Cup instead.

This, however, is where the story unravels somewhat, as he showed very little on that Friday afternoon in Gloucestershire. Nassalam was never in contention and was pulled up with four fences still to jump. That race was a big step-up in class and has given his trainer plenty to think about.

One thing coming out of that race was the fact the handicapper decided not to drop his mark, despite a pretty ordinary performance, which Gary Moore was not exactly happy about. Carrying so much weight will certainly be an obstacle and one that is likely causing this runaway winner of the Welsh Grand National to hover outside the top 10 in the betting for the big one on Saturday.
