Nap of the day with owen mcmahon (2)

Tuesday's selection was another non-runner - I can't seem to escape them at the moment - after attracting good support early doors. Frustrating.

But we go again 24 hours later as I look to the card at Ludlow, where a recent Cheltenham winner with an impeccable record at the Shropshire venue rates the NAP of the Day.

NAP of the Day - Wednesday, October 9

  • 16:05 Ludlow - La Renommee @ 11/4

Following an adequate reappearance over hurdles a fortnight ago, LA RENOMMEE looks ready to strike in this three-mile handicap chase.

Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole's six-year-old mare has been very consistent since going over fences at the start of last year. Between then and now, the daughter of Doctor Dino has contested 12 chases and her form reads 2211312P2261.

That includes finishing runner-up to subsequent Mares' Chase winner Limerick Lace and Brides Hill, who herself went on to claim Grade 2 honours, at the Punchestown Festival, for Gavin Cromwell.

Only twice has the selection disappointed over the bigger obstacles - firstly when pulled-in a Listed affair at Aintree and secondly when tailed off in the Premier Chase at Kelso. The ground was very heavy that day on Merseyside, so put a line through that, and she just didn't fire north of the border. Everyone's entitled to a bad run or two.

She bounced right back at Cheltenham next time out, winning the Challenger Series Mares' Chase Final in April comfortably.

Off a mark of 127, she travelled all over her eight rivals and was still on the bridle approaching the last, needing only to be pushed out by talented jockey Charlie Hammond to secure the victory.

That was a career-best performance and it was only her second attempt at the trip (her no-show at Kelso being the first), so there's good reason to believe the mare has more to offer.

A rise of five pounds is fair given the manner in which she did the business at HQ, and both trainer and jockey have been among the winners lately which offers further optimism. She's also unbeaten at Ludlow, with three wins from three visits.

According to the 16:05 Ludlow Odds, it's Olivers Travels who represents the biggest threat to the selection.

He's been in good form this summer for the Bowens, but he has to defy a career-high mark of 126 for finishing second last time out in what rates his toughest assignment of the year. It could prove a step too far.

The handicapper has given 10-year-olds Topofthecotswolds and Presentandcounting every chance off reduced marks of 117 and 127 respectively, but a leap of faith is required on their recent form.

Outsiders Sacre Coeur and Great d'Ange aren't hopeless either, but ultimately nothing makes more than slight appeal against La Renommee, who has outstanding claims in this company.
