Betfred’s Owen McMahon picks out his best bet from all six meetings in the UK & Ireland on Wednesday 26 July 2023.

NAP of the Day

  • 8.50 Leicester – Al Asmakh e/w @ 12/1

Patience is required on Wednesday, for my NAP runs in the very last of 39 races.

The selection? Sean Woods’ AL ASMAKH, who runs at Leicester in a 0-75 fillies’ handicap over 1m4f.

This three-year-old daughter of Cracksman made a relatively pleasing racecourse debut at Chelmsford in March before a solid showing in what’s since proved an extremely strong race at Southwell a month later.

The three horses that finished in front of the selection that day were the now 109-rated Saint George, Sweet William – who is rated 95 having hacked up off 88 in a competitive Newbury handicap last weekend – and subsequent winner Banderas.

Woods then gave the filly a 91-day break before running her in a fillies’ novice at Kempton just under three weeks ago. She was an eye-catching third there – a performance which, on top of her previous effort at Southwell, leads me to believe she’s better than her potentially lenient opening mark of 73.

Regular readers of our NAP of the Day feature will know I tipped up a winner – Commander Of Life – for the Woods/Robert Havlin partnership at Chelmsford on Tuesday, and I’m hoping lightning can strike twice courtesy of Al Asmakh.

Because her opening price is about twice as big as I expected, and as Betfred have made the 8.50 an Extra Place Race with 3 places on offer instead of the usual two, I’m advising this one each-way.
