Betfred’s Owen McMahon picks out his best bet from all six meetings across the UK & Ireland on Wednesday 23 August 2023.

NAP of the Day

  • 2.40 Carlisle – Summit @ 5/6

To be honest, my initial thought when studying this race was to oppose William Haggas’ SUMMIT.

Having been aware of the filly’s reputation prior to her racecourse debut, I’ve paid close attention to the two-year-old’s career so far and I think it’s fair to say she’s been somewhat underwhelming.

After a promising start in a decent maiden at Haydock in July, she failed to progress when attempting to go one better in a similar event at Newmarket a couple of weeks later.

The form of the latter contest hasn’t worked out like connections would have hoped, but the fact is it’s still a standout in the context of this race at Carlisle on Wednesday.

Frankly, the selection lacks serious rivals here. She has eight – one newbie for a yard who don’t exactly excel with juveniles, four with uninspiring form in the book and three that boast pretty lukewarm claims.

The one who can give her the most to think about is Gutsy Girl for Charlie Fellowes, in the famous Oppenheimer silks. It looked a good race she started out in at Ascot late last month and improvement can be expected.

But ultimately Summit, who should enjoy this return to 6f on a stiff track, can get off the mark here.
