Nap of the day with owen mcmahon (4)

I'm feeling refreshed after a week off and hoping to mark my return in winning fashion, as I select a well-handicapped invidiual looking to bounce back from a poor run my Nap of the Day for Wednesday.

Nap of the Day - Wednesday, February 12

Phillip Hobbs & Johnson White's OH MY JOHNNY disappointed on handicap debut at Haydock last month, but he's afforded another chance up in trip and down in grade at Hereford on Wednesday.

The son of Soldier Of Fortune was sent off 11/8f for a Class 3 affair on Merseyside but ultimately beat just one of seven horses home. No explanation was provided for the sub-par performance, but he clearly didn't show up as he was beaten by three out.

The fact connections are happy to turn him back out 25 days later is promising. Every horse is allowed an off day, and all that.

If he's back on-song, he remains an attractive proposition off an opening mark of 116. On what he's achieved to date - particularly his five-length triumph over the 115-rated Knead A Win - that underestimates him.

The step up to an extended 2m3f ought to suit also. He's yet to race over further than the minimum trip, but breeding suggests it'll be no bother whatsoever - which is the impression he gave when doing his best work at the finish in his maiden win at Uttoxeter before the turn of the year.

This Class 4 contest also looks a signifcantly easier assignment. Two of his rivals - namely DJ Pete and the 12-year-old Barnaviddaun - are returning from over 600 days on the sidelines, while Maxcel and Pounding Poet lack fitness on the back of 207 and 357-day layoffs respectively.

Nigel Twiston-Davies' Guy is somewhat interesting off a much-reduced mark of 117, but he is 10 years old and likely just a horse on the decline. This is also his first run over the smaller obstacles in almost two years.

Gentle Frank is impossible to advise on all known form, while Melton Mossy and Klic Boum need to find improvement.

That leaves Maasai Mara and Reallyntruthfully as the main dangers to the selection. The latter I'm most worried about, but his rating of 119 looks harsh enough after his handicap debut the last day.

There's no doubt in my mind that Oh My Johnny has the most potential of this 11-strong field and I make him hard to beat if back on a going day.
