Owen McMahon's NAP of the Day

On an above-par Tuesday featuring six meetings covering both codes, it's to Yarmouth I go for the NAP of the Day.

Trusted to do the business on the East Coast is a potentially well-handicapped type who makes a swift reappearance after an eye-catching run last time out.

Being by Galileo Gold and out of an Exceed And Excel mare, it's fair to say Michael Bell's three-year-old MEDICIAN STAR, who cost just shy of 30,000 guineas, hasn't lived up to expectations so far.

I'm sure connections weren't harbouring Classic aspirations for him, but at the same time I cant imagine they were expecting to be contesting Class 6 handicaps off a mark of just 56 quite so soon.

But his juvenile campaign was, frankly, a disaster. He was late to the party, making his racecourse debut as late as September, and only beat four rivals - out of 25 - in three starts over 24 days.

There's not much point looking into those runs, to be honest with you. He was as green as it gets on each outing and it's my suspicion that once it became apparent he wouldn't be making a splash in more competitive races, the plan became an educative one with the added bonus of gaining an attractive mark for next season.

So, after a gelding operation and summer break, he reappeared this term in a seven-runner, 0-55 handicap over a mile on the all-weather at Lingfield.

While some of the same issues reared their head - namely a slow break and early keenness - I thought he looked a lot more streetwise and comfortable in handicap company.

Medician Star recovered quickly from his poor start and relished the longer trip, staying on eye-catchingly to get up for third, closing on the front two with every stride. Much more like it.

As it was his first start in 188 days and his first after being gelded, I expect a fair amount of progression as he tackles an identical event on the turf at Yarmouth just under a fortnight later.

I'm fairly confident this horse is better than his current mark. In fact, he could be a lot better than it in time, as there's so much room for improvement where he's concerned.

This doesn't look much, if at all harder than his last assignment and I predict he will go off a good bit shorter shorter than his current odds of 3/1, so the advice is to take that price now.
