Nap of the day with owen mcmahon main 2

It's to Salisbury I'm taken for my first Nap of the Day of the week on Tuesday.

A handicap debutant for the Gosdens catches my eye in the penultimate event of the seven-race card in Wiltshire.

I think John & Thady Gosden's CREPE SUZETTE has been given a massive chance on handicap debut at Salisbury on Tuesday.

The handicapper has awarded the three-year-old daughter of Saxon Warrior an opening mark of 77 ahead of this 0-78 fillies' handicap over 1m2f, which looks lenient on what the thrice-raced filly has achieved to date.

She never recovered from a slow start on debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket back in November, but showed a much-improved standard in her subsequent couple of runs.

At Wolverhampton just under three weeks later, upped to a mile, she was just touched off by Michael Bell's Kate O'Riley, who was in receipt of five pounds. That rival won on her handicap debut next time out, off a mark of 78, before finishing fifth to subsequent Betfred Oaks heroine Minnie Hauk in the Cheshire Oaks this May.

Godolphin's Wild Angel, third behind the selection at Wolverhampton, had more than held her own in four starts previously, including a couple of Class 2 contests, and is herself rated in the mid-70s.

Back at Dunstall Park over 150 days later, she broke her duck at the third attempt in another fillies' maiden, this time over 1m1½f.

The runner-up, who finished just a head behind the selection, was disappointing next time out, but she was far too keen to do herself justice and is better judged on his previous second to Protest (rated 91). The third (75) and fourth (82) have both won since.

Crepe Suzette was probably better than the official margin of a head, too. She appeared to be doing only as much as she needed to once hitting the front after turning for home.

There ought to be further improvement to come on just her fourth-ever start and second at three. I also think the further step up in trip will really suit.

Of her 10 rivals, it's Richard Hannon's Schemaya I fear most. The Ghaiyyath filly is improving with every run and should be competitive, despite a five-pound rise for winning on handicap debut last month.

Her aside, this is a field I expect Crepe Suzette to have few problems seeing off.
