Nap of the day with owen mcmahon (2)

On a lowkey Sunday, it's a bumper at Navan that's piqued my interest. Gordon Elliott pits some of his better horses in that division against one another, and one of them rates my Nap of the Day.

Nap of the Day - Sunday, December 15

  • 15:25 Navan - Kalypso'chance @ 11/8

The betting for the Listed bumper at Navan on Sunday is beginning to reflect Harry Swan's decision to ride Classical Creek over stablemates Kalypso'chance and Whinney Hill, who also don the maroon and white silks of Gigginstown, but I don't think he's the best of the bunch.

Of course, Swan's decision holds weight. There's also no doubt his mount, who held a lofty reputation coming into the season, should come on plenty for his win at Down Royal in November, but that form is questionable to say the least.

The runner-up Faithful Follower, who was just under two lengths behind Gordon Elliott's runner in Northern Ireland, was over 15 lengths adrift in the Willie Elliott Memorial bumper at Fairyhouse the other week, while the third and fourth have done the form no favours either.

I'd imagine it's very difficult to make a decision on these types so early in their careers, especially if their homework isn't quite translated come raceday. I know that Classical Creek has always caught the eye on the gallops at Cullentra, but that doesn't mean he's a better racehorse than something that goes about their business quietly at home.

On that note, it's KALYPSO'CHANCE who gets the nod.

The four-year-old son of Masked Marvel is, after all, the antepost favourite for the Champion Bumper at time of publication after making a huge impression on rules debut at Punchestown just three weeks back.

It looks decent form, too. He powered 15 lengths clear of Willie Mullins' Soir De Garde, a half-brother to Champion Hurdler State Man, who was a further 27 lengths clear of W B Easy, who finished fifth (beaten under 10 lengths) in the Goffs Defender Bumper at the Punchestown Festival back in April.

I actually think that's significantly more than what Classical Creek achieved at Down Royal and I am a bit surprised at Swan's decision - although, as I suggested earlier, I can see why it would be difficult to jump ship on such limited evidence.

Interestingly, it's Patrick Mullins who gets the leg up on the favourite - a rare ride for his father Willie's biggest competition over there on the Emerald Isle.

That's a plus in my book. The 16-time Irish amateur champion jockey is mustard in these contests and I'd say he'll be pretty excited to ride this one.

I'm advising Kalypso'chance at 11/8, but I couldn't put anyone off waiting or backing him at SP for I suspect punters will continue to latch onto the jockey bookings angle.

Jockeys and trainers should know, I get it, but how often do they get it wrong? Often enough. Hopefully this is another example.
