Owen McMahon's NAP of the Day

Willie Mullins sends an army to Ayr on Saturday as he bids to become Champion Trainer on these shores following I Am Maximus' Grand National triumph last weekend.

I'm expecting at least one of his runners, who rates my NAP of the Day, to add to the prize pot and bolster his chances of a remarkable achievement.

  • 17:20 Ayr - C'Est Ta Chance @ 2/1

When studying Saturday's cards, there was one price that stood out like a sore thumb. Odds-against about a Mullins inmate deemed good enough to contest the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, at Ayr in April? Yes please...

Five-year-old C'EST TA CHANCE was disappointing at the Festival, but he wouldn't be the first young horse to struggle in the hustle and bustle of that race before going onto better things.

I think the Simon Munir & Isaac Souede-owned gelding is much better judged on his earlier form at Navan, when just touched off by subsequent winner William Munny who is as short as 13/2 for the Grade 1 bumper at the Punchestown Festival in just under two weeks.

That's comfortably the standout piece of form in this field. Only six of his rivals have experience under rules and of those the biggest danger to the selection is probably Histrionic for Paul Nicholls - but he's been bitterly disappointing to date and needs to find a serious amount of improvement.

According to the betting, it's actually the unraced pair of Califet En Vol and Jazz De Cotte for Nicky Henderson and Gordon Elliott respectively that'll give Patrick Mullins' mount the most to think about. I agree.

Both are relatively interesting PTP recruits for powerful connections, but frankly neither appeal as types that could down C'Est Ta Chance first time out, providing the latter runs to his pre-Cheltenham levels.

That's the key. If he hadn't been to HQ and performed like he did, what price would he be here? Odds-on? That's what I was expecting to see when first opening the market.

For me, he's a bet at 1/1 or greater. He has the potential to make a mockery of his current price.
