NAP of the Day: 6/1 shot looks overpriced at Sandown

Owen McMahon's NAP of the Day

On a far from vintage Friday, the NAP of the Day comes from Sandown.

The race that most piqued my interest when studying Friday's cards was this 0-130 handicap hurdle over 2m4f.

Reason being, I'm keen to oppose three of the market principals - namely Spring Note, East India Express and Issam.

It was easily a career-best performance when the former bolted up in a Newbury handicap last time out, but that was a weak race over the minimum trip that she dominated from the front. The six-year-old mare has been raised a whopping 13lbs as a result and steps back up in trip here, so I'm happy to let her win at the prices.

East India Express has been awarded the same mark of 123, which I suspect is unjustified at this stage of his career. The Milan gelding won a poor novice hurdle at Kempton back in November and could only manage fourth, beaten over 17 lengths by Cheltenham Festival hopeful Gidleigh Park, at Newbury a month later. Perhaps that wasn't his true running, but again he's one I'd rather be against than with.

As for Issam, I don't think he stays this trip in these conditions.

My idea of the winner is Joe Tizzard's Gyenyame, who looks overpriced at current odds.

The six-year-old son of Nathaniel showed ability amidst inconsistency last season, but he seems to have turned a corner on that front based on his three starts this term. While he's yet to win in that time, he's gone close in some good contests.

I think Friday's race, which rates an easier assignment, will be run to suit the selection.

I see plenty of pace on offer and, on rain-softened ground at a testing track like Sandown, it could be set up for a closer, which I think this horse is. He always seems to be doing his best work at the finish.

If things play out the way I've suggested, I'm hopeful that Gyenyame will have plenty to say at the business end of the race.
