Nap of the day with owen mcmahon (3)

After back-to-back winners - at 7/4 and 7/2 - over the last 48 hours, we're bidding for a NAP hat-trick on Friday.

Trusted to do the honours is a twice-raced juvenile in Sandown's opener.

NAP of the Day - Friday, September 13

  • 14:00 Sandown - Reservardo @ 6/4

I'm strong on one at Doncaster tomorrow for Day 2 of the Betfred St Leger Festival - click here to find out who, plus three other tips - but my NAP of the Day can be found in the opener at Sandown.

The two-year-old maiden stakes over five furlongs can go to RESERVARDO for Simon & Ed Crisford.

A son of Profitable who fetched €270k at a breeze-up in May, he's been runner-up in a couple of maiden events at Windsor and Ripon and is now taken to get off the mark at the third attempt.

The initial reaction to his debut at Windsor was likely one of disappointment, given he was sent off the odds-on favourite and beaten by an 18/1 chance who brought modest form to the table, but the margin of defeat was slim and that horse has since bolted up at Chepstow by five lengths, so the form looks significantly better in hindsight.

He was beaten more convincingly - by 2¾ lengths to be precise - at Ripon subsequently, but his conqueror, who set a new record for five furlongs at the North Yorkshire venue, looks well above average. He lines up in the G2 Flying Childers Stakes at Donny exactly an hour after the selection has hopefully done the business in Surrey.

Reservardo was over five lengths ahead of his other three rivals, so the suggestion is that he just bumped into one there. I'm fairly confident there's nothing of that calibre running against him on Friday.

According to the 14:00 Sandown Odds, it's Glamour Show and Lazzar who are the biggest threats. However, the former is without a win in four starts and isn't progressing, while the latter was 50/1 on his debut just eight days ago and I'd be surprised were he to prove good enough.

These lightly-raced juveniles can improve at unpredictable rates, but I think Reservardo sets a high standard and he too is open to substantial improvement, so I think he should be hard to beat under jockey Callum Shepherd.
