Andrew Balding's DISPLAYING is unlikely to ever live up to the promise his profile offers, but I at least suspect his turn is near.

The three-year-old son of Kingman is out of a Listed-winning mare and he cost Cheveley Park a cool 125k guineas a couple of years back, but he's failed to open his account in three starts to date.

On belated debut in the mud at Nottingham in October last year, he finished a remote seventh of eight, beaten 37 lengths - an exaggerated margin given he was completely eased down by jockey David Probert, who returns to the saddle on Friday, once victory was out of the equation.

Dare I say the selection was travelling as well as most until a point, in a hot race featuring the likes of Smoken (rated 95) and Archivist (90).

He wasn't seen again at two, spending the next 201 days - during which the colt became a gelding - on the sidelines before reappearing at Windsor this May.

A slow start made things immediately more difficult in Berkshire, and his greenness was a further hinderance. He raced keenly, carried his head high at times, and hung both ways under pressure.

Despite all that, he finished third, albeit a remote one, behind the 85-rated Vecu and a well-backed debutant for William Haggas. More like it.

Displaying improved again at Nottingham just over a fortnight later, occupying the third spot once more behind a pair of even-money favourites - namely the 88-rated Hymnbook and Irish Derby entrant High Degree. He was within six lengths of both rivals this time.

He seems to be going the right way and an opening mark of 70 could underestimate him as he tries handicapping for the first time.

Hopefully the assistance of first-time cheekpieces helps him to race more economically and bring about further improvement, too - while the step up to 1m2f might have the same result.

According to the 18:05 Goodwood Odds, it's Telecommunication the selection and the other 12 runners have to beat. Michael Bell's Arizona gelding comes here confident after success at Yarmouth, but needing to defy a six-pound rise in a higher grade.

There's any amount of other dangers at this level, but the case for Displaying is  strong at his opening price of 5/1. Nap material.
