The Goffer Grand National Odds 2024: Talented but stamina a huge question mark

Another from the stable of Gordon Elliott, The Goffer has seen quite the drift in the Ante-Post market following a disappointing performance in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival. Could he still be a well-priced longshot contender though?

Having been given a 142-day break following a poor run as the 4/1 favourite in a Grade 3 over at Limerick back in October, many expected him to show some promise upon his return at the Cheltenham Festival in the Ultima.

He went off as the 9/2 favourite but struggled to get into the race and, despite finishing fifth, that result came with a distance of 34 lengths behind the winner that day, Chianti Classico.

One of the reasons he went into that one was some strong showings a year or so ago: a good display in the Gold Cup at Sandown, where he finished fourth, and then looked the strongest horse down the stretch in the Kerry National at Listowel back in September. The problem that day was that he came from an awful long way back and only finished fifth. That indicates there is some real stamina in the legs of this seven-year-old, so could the extra distance of the Grand National really suit him?

Remember, he’s not been overly exposed and this will only be his 12th start over fences and 20th under rules. There is certainly a school of thought that he’s ready to make a big step forward and there is a really strong run somewhere in his future. I have my doubts that it will be Saturday but as a long shot each-way play, he may well be one of the more interesting in the field of 34.
