Monbeg Genius Grand National Odds 2025: Deserves plenty of each-way love

Monbeg Genius heads into Saturday’s Grand National having well and truly got his mojo back after a tough 2023/24 jumps campaign. Does he have the form to be involved coming to the line?

Fontaine Collonges blew the field away in a Class II race at Haydock Park in October but 12 lengths back in second was the 16/1 shot Monbeg Genius as things started to get better for the nine-year-old based at Jonjo O’Neill’s yard.

Carrying 11st 10lbs at Chepstow in the Welsh Grand National, it was always going to be a tall order to win but a very creditable fourth-place finish gave his connections optimism. Jockey that day, Nick Schofield, was certainly happy with how he jumped despite having one poor job early on. Not many would have been able to see that considering the fog that day but hope was certainly coming back that Monbeg Genius’ form and confidence was returning.

That hope was cemented by victory last time out at Uttoxeter despite once more carrying plenty of weight for the Lisa Mitten Turns 60 Handicap Chase. The horse kept going, romped home five lengths clear and paid punters out very nicely at 17/2.

These recent results and performances might not have erased disappointments such as a pretty lacklustre run in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival last year. Monbeg Genius made a bad mistake at the third and was never in it before being pulled up before the 16th. The previous year he’d finished third in the same race, which seemed to signal good times were a coming.

It looks as though the '23/24 jumps season was a bit of a blip but now Monbeg Genius is back on solid ground. Outside chance here and very much an each-way play worth backing.
