I sat here writing these horse profiles a year ago as Minella Indo’s price collapsed and he briefly went favourite after Rachael Blackmore was confirmed as the jockey. That surge of money for the horse was something to note but it is also pertinent to remember that the market corrected itself within a few hours.
The Blackmore effect took a lot of money but then it cooled and Minella Indo returned to the price we’d expect and went off at 28/1. So if you are looking to back him, remember to watch the markets closely to ensure you get the best price.
As for his chances? Well, we’ve not seen much since finishing third here last year. Minella Indo was ahead over the last before I Am Maximus overtook him and strode away for the win, with Delta Work just getting up for a second. It was a fine each-way win for those who backed him to place.
Since that performance he looked solid enough in the a Grade III at Punchestown, finishing second to French Dynamite but ahead of Hewick, who is heavily fancied for the Grand National. The big issue is that run at Navan in the Boyne Hurdle back in February. That was not good. The going that day was soft to heavy and was the first run over hurdles since 2019.
So there are mitigating circumstances but confidence cannot be high in the Henry de Bromhead camp that this 12-year-old can finally add the Grand National to the Cheltenham Gold Cup victory back in 2021.
The last horse that old who won the race was Amberleigh House back in 2004. Of course, the most famous winner of them all - Red Rum - won it for a third and final time at that age, and if Minella Indo does it it would certainly be nearly as popular.
